Schlossweihnachtsmarkt (castle Christmas market) around Dätzingen Castle with Advent concerts and art exhibitions — one of the oldest in the Böblingen district
The Grafenauer Weihnachtsmarkt differs from many other Advent markets in the region: it doesn't focus on mulled wine and bratwurst, but on art, culture, and the castle ensemble itself. The setting is extraordinary — Dätzingen Castle, a 16th-century Renaissance building with extensive grounds, has been expanded several times and today houses a museum, event spaces, and a gallery. The market takes place around the castle, with stalls in the castle courtyard, at the castle tower, and along the access roads.
The market opens on Saturday, December 5, 2026, at 11 a.m. The program includes castle tours, museum visits, and Advent concerts. Art exhibitions by local artists — sculptures, paintings, photography — are held in the castle cellar. The stalls offer a mix of arts and crafts (ceramics, wood carving, jewelry, glasswork) with Advent items (Christmas tree decorations, incense, sweets) and regional gastronomy. Culinary catering is provided by local clubs — mulled wine, punch, Christmas pastries, Swabian specialties like Maultaschen and Spätzle.
Grafenau is a small municipality with just under 7,500 inhabitants, located in the western Böblingen district between Stuttgart and the Calw district border. The municipal area is divided into two districts: Grafenau-Dätzingen (with the castle) and Däfern. The Heckengäu — the landscape between the Black Forest, Schönbuch, and Stromberg — is characterized by scattered orchards, hedgerows, and old castles. The castle Christmas market is part of the Baden-Württemberg tradition of "Schlössle-Märkte" (little castle markets), which has grown significantly in the last 20 years.
Expect a contemplative, culturally rich market of manageable size — not mass tourism, but regular visitors from Grafenau, Weil der Stadt, Renningen, Calw, and Sindelfingen. The castle facade illuminated, the stalls in front of the historic wall, the crunch of footsteps on gravel, accompanied by Advent music from the castle cellar. A market for connoisseurs, not for party-goers.
The municipality of Grafenau is organizing the 2026 market in its established culturally focused format: the emphasis is on arts and crafts and Advent concerts, not just catering. The museum and gallery in the castle itself will be open for special tours, and art exhibitions will be held in the castle cellar.
The musical accompaniment changes throughout the day: Advent brass players in the morning, a children's choir at noon, and a classical ensemble in the afternoon. The club stalls will offer hot food (Maultaschen, lentil soup, fries), mulled wine, and Christmas pastries.
Detailed times for concerts and tours can be obtained from the municipality of Grafenau (Tel. 07033 403-275).
Free admission. Castle tours and museum visits may be subject to a fee (day prices on site). Consumption at the club stalls at usual Advent market prices (mulled wine €4–5, snacks €5–8).
