Over 50 artists transform Wilhelmshaven's asphalt into a canvas
The International StreetArt Festival Wilhelmshaven is an unusual encounter between high-quality art and urban space. For three days, around 50 artists from numerous countries kneel on the asphalt of Wilhelmshaven's pedestrian zone, creating works rarely seen in this form. Some paintings are so large that artists need hours to complete them, while others are so detailed they appear like photographs at first glance.
The festival is organized into three categories. The Copyists reproduce classical works of art history—Vermeer, Caravaggio, Van Gogh—with astonishing precision on the ground. The Free Artists create their own works, often with social or environmental messages. The 3D Artists work with perspective illusions: viewed from the right angle, the image suddenly reveals an abyss, a waterfall, or an optical illusion that appears real. One of the most spectacular works at each edition is a giant 3D perspective painting, worked on over several days.
A hallmark of the festival is the public voting. Visitors can cast their votes and help decide the prize winners in each category. Children and teenagers have their own painting competition with age-appropriate tools and themes. Thus, the festival is not only an art exhibition but also a participatory urban experience. The works remain visible until wind, rain, and traffic cause them to disappear—a deliberate staging of transience.
The 14th edition in 2026 continues the series of StreetArt Festivals in Wilhelmshaven. The organizers are once again focusing on a mix of international professional artists and regional talents.
The works are created over three days and remain visible for a few more days—depending on the weather and street cleaning. Visitors to the festival can witness the creation process live.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring 2026. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Free admission.
Wilhelmshaven is accessible via the A 29 motorway and federal roads B 210 and B 437. Wilhelmshaven main train station is within walking distance of the city center. During the festival, there are signposted parking facilities on the outskirts of the pedestrian zone.
The artworks are spread across the central pedestrian zone and adjacent squares. A festival map helps with orientation. Artists work on their pieces from early morning to late evening and are available to answer questions.
The city center's restaurants are open during the festival, supplemented by additional festival stands offering food and drinks. Vegetarian and vegan options are available.
