A Day to Kick Off the Ruhr Area Summer

In recent years, the city of Gladbeck has established its Open-Air Summer as a signature event — a series of programs that bundles various open-air formats on the central Willy-Brandt-Platz between May and September. Gladbeck tanzt is the 2026 opening event and thus the start of a long event season. The format is new, the concept clear: an open-air dance floor for every generation, free, low-threshold, participatory.

Dance Offerings for Every Generation

Instead of a single large dance floor with one style, „Gladbeck tanzt“ offers a staggered program where different generations and dance cultures get their moment over six hours:

  • 2:00 PM — Opening with radio presenter Timo Düngen
  • 2:10 PM„Komm tanz' mit mir“ with Patricia Montorio from Tanztempel Linda Calder — participatory activity for children aged 3 to 6
  • 2:40 PM„Tanzen im Sitzen“ by Caritas Gladbeck — movement-promoting choreographies for seniors and people with mobility impairments
  • 3:00 PMBreakdance Show by European Breakdance Champion Plarent Kicmari, parallel „Hip-Hop for Teens“ with TanzExpress Buer
  • 4:00 PMClassical Dance Styles with Christine and Robert Kadur from Tanzsportclub Harmonie 1978 e.V. — Discofox, Salsa, Line Dance, Waltz, and more

Plarent Kicmari — The Star Guest

A special coup for a free city festival: European Breakdance Champion Plarent Kicmari will perform at Willy-Brandt-Platz. Kicmari is among the top of the German breakdance scene and combines his show with a small workshop component — spectators are occasionally invited to join in.

Low-Threshold and Participatory

The program philosophy is clear: No audience watching from the outside — but a city square that becomes a participatory dance floor. The workshops are beginner-friendly, and the dance instructors are experienced in working with mixed groups. Parents dance with their children, teens try Hip-Hop next to seniors during „Tanzen im Sitzen“, and in the late afternoon, the dance floor becomes a stage for classic partner dances.

Catering — Including the „Lovely Bartender“

Various stands around the dance floor provide food and drinks. The „Lovely Bartender“ with its cocktails is particularly popular — an established brand in Gladbeck's event scene, also present at other Open-Air Summer events.

Kick-off of the Gladbeck Open-Air Summer

„Gladbeck tanzt“ is the first event in a series of open-air events at Willy-Brandt-Platz and in other Gladbeck locations between June and September 2026. Those who experience the day and enjoy the format should plan for more summer weekends in Gladbeck — program updates on gladbeck.de.
