Caribbean festival with live music, rum tasting, and white sandy beach on Willy-Brandt-Platz
Gladbeck, a city of around 75,000 inhabitants in the Recklinghausen district, is located in the northern Ruhr area, nestled between Gelsenkirchen, Bottrop, and Essen. Like many Ruhr area cities, Gladbeck has transformed its mining origins into a modern city with retail, culture, and quality of life. In the center of the downtown area lies Willy-Brandt-Platz — a spacious square in front of the town hall that becomes the stage for one of the most original city festivals in the Ruhr area in the summer: Gladbeck Caribbean.
Anyone entering Willy-Brandt-Platz on the arrival weekend experiences a complete change of scenery: giant palm trees are erected, tons of white sand are laid down, and deckchairs, hammocks, and beach volleyball courts transform the pavement into a beach bar atmosphere. Several bars are set up with cocktails (Mojito, Caipirinha, Piña Colada, exotic rum drinks), cuisines (Jamaican Jerk Chicken, Cuban sandwiches, Caribbean bowls, grilled fish), and of course, the main stage for live music.
The festival kicks off on Thursday with the first Caribbean sounds on stage. The highlight of the opening day is the rum tasting at 4:30 PM: 10 different Caribbean rums are presented in a guided tasting, from the mild Cuba Libre classic to robust aged rums from Jamaica and Martinique. Participation fee is €25, registration by email to [email protected] — spaces are limited.
On the second day, the Caribbean band Furumba opens the live music program on the main stage. Latin and Caribbean sounds for dancing, plus DJ sets that run late into the night.
Saturday starts in the morning with the beach volleyball tournament on the specially built sand courts — registration on-site, mixed teams welcome. In the evening, Latino Total plays on the main stage — Salsa, Bachata, Reggaeton, a melting pot of Latin American and Caribbean sounds that gets the entire city center dancing.
Family Day is aimed at children and families. Highlight: At 1:00 PM, Captain Blackbeard leads the treasure hunt through the city center for children — with riddles, costumes, and a real treasure at the end. Participation is free, registration by email to [email protected].
Several food stalls offer Caribbean specialties: Jerk Chicken with spicy Jamaican marinade, Cuban sandwiches, bowls with rice, beans, plantains, grilled fish, tacos. At the bars: Mojitos, Caipirinhas, Piña Coladas, and special rum cocktails. Lying on the beach and being served comes as close to the real Caribbean as possible in the Ruhr area.
The organizer is Beach Projekt Event GmbH, which has been organizing beach festivals in several Ruhr area cities for years. The format is proven and is implemented in Gladbeck with local support from the city marketing department and the retailers on Willy-Brandt-Platz.
Willy-Brandt-Platz is located directly in Gladbeck's city center. Public transport: Gladbeck-West station (S 9), then a 5-minute walk. Car: A2 exit Gladbeck-Mitte, then follow signs for the city center, parking garages are signposted. Admission: completely free — only food, drinks, the rum tasting (€25), and any special activities are subject to charge.
