Spiritual Evening with the Cistercian Nuns of Waldsassen Abbey
GEISTZeit at Waldsassen Abbey is a spiritual evening event at Waldsassen Abbey, a Cistercian convent in the town of Waldsassen in the Tirschenreuth district of the northern Upper Palatinate. The venue is the Collegiate Basilica – one of Bavaria's most important Baroque churches – with its famous cloister.
The evening is led by the Cistercian nuns of the Abbey. Central elements include a candlelight procession through the baroque cloister, communal singing and prayer, a sermon, and the eucharistic blessing. Several choirs – including Cantora, the Kiwi Choir, Fontana di Vita, and Grazie a Dio – provide the music.
GEISTZeit is intended as an open spiritual offering: not a concert, but an evening of prayer and contemplation that invites inner reflection. Admission is free. The series is organized by the Foundation Culture and Encounter Centre Waldsassen Abbey (KuBZ), which fosters the cultural and spiritual life around the abbey.
Waldsassen Abbey has a history spanning centuries and remains a vibrant monastery to this day. GEISTZeit makes this lived spirituality accessible to visitors from the region and beyond – in one of the most impressive sacred spaces in the Upper Palatinate.
The 2026 GEISTZeit will be celebrated on Monday, May 25, starting at 7:30 PM in the Waldsassen Abbey Church; there will be another date during the year on February 22, 2026. The evening will be led by the Cistercian nuns of Waldsassen Abbey together with the choirs Cantora, Kiwi Choir, Fontana di Vita, and Grazie a Dio. The program includes a candlelight procession through the baroque cloister, communal singing and prayer, a sermon, and the eucharistic blessing. The organizer is the Foundation Culture and Encounter Centre (KuBZ). Admission is free.
Another GEISTZeit date in 2026 is February 22, 2026. The exact liturgy and program are the responsibility of Waldsassen Abbey together with the KuBZ.
Waldsassen is located in the Tirschenreuth district in the northern Upper Palatinate, near the Czech border, accessible via the A93 (Mitterteich exit) and the B299. The venue is the Stiftsbasilika at Basilikaplatz 2.
Admission is free.
GEISTZeit takes place several times a year – always starting in the evening. A visit can be well combined with a tour of the Collegiate Library and the Abbey Garden.
