Flower market with a 5-meter fuchsia pyramid in the old town
Wemding has a special claim to host a fuchsia market: The small town in the district of Donau-Ries is the birthplace of the botanist and physician Leonhart Fuchs (1501–1566), whose name in the Latin form Fuchsia lives on for the flowering plant. With the Fuchsia Market, the town honors its most famous son and at the same time makes the botany of the Renaissance tangible.
The trademark of the festival is the Fuchsia Pyramid in front of the town parish church. Five meters high, it rises on a supporting structure in 180 flower boxes — equipped with up to 700 blooming fuchsia plants of various varieties: Beacon, Insulinde, Genii, and many more. The pyramid is presented for the first time on the festival weekend and remains until September — it is a popular photo motif in Wemding's old town throughout the summer.
Stalls are spread throughout the old town over the festival weekend:
Wemding, with just under 6,000 inhabitants, is one of the most distinctive small towns in the Nördlinger Ries. The almost completely preserved medieval city wall with twelve towers, the town hall from 1551, and the rows of houses in the old town form an unusually harmonious backdrop. Those who come for the Fuchsia Market can ideally combine their visit with the Wallfahrtskirche Maria Brünnlein (pilgrimage church), a stroll along the city wall, or an excursion to Nördlingen.
The Wemding Fuchsia Market 2026 opens on Saturday, May 30, at 9 a.m. and closes on Sunday, May 31, at 5 p.m. (shops also open until 5 p.m.). In the center of the old town, the five-meter-high fuchsia pyramid will be erected in front of the town parish church, made from 180 flower boxes and up to 700 blooming fuchsia plants. Dozens of exhibitors — nurseries from Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and beyond — will present fuchsias, herbs, ornamental and medicinal plants, roses, succulents, cacti, and bonsais. For the first time in 2026, Wemding will also be directly accessible by train — a new stop at Otting-Weilheim station with a paid shuttle (€2). Free parking and shuttle service complement the offering.
By car via the B25 (Donauwörth–Nördlingen) or the A7 (exit Aalen-Westhausen, then B25 towards Donauwörth). During the festival, free parking is available on the outskirts of town with a free shuttle service to the old town. By train from May 2026, a new direct stop at Otting-Weilheim station with a paid shuttle (€2).
Free admission to the entire market. Plants, seeds, and garden items are paid for directly at the stalls.
Free flower storage service at the main market — visitors can temporarily store purchases in a box without having to take them to the car immediately. Sunday opening hours for shops on the festival Sunday.
