Wine hike on Whit Sunday through the vineyards of Alf, Zell and Pünderich on the Untermosel
The Pfingstweinwanderung (Whit Sunday Wine Hike) Alf-Zell is one of the traditional spring wine events on the Untermosel. Participants hike through the vineyards of the Mosel high slopes between Alf, Zell and Pünderich over two or three stages. Winemakers from the region set up tasting stands at several stations where Mosel wine can be enjoyed in its diverse forms.
In 2026, the hike will take place on Whit Sunday, May 24th. The mild May weather, the blooming vineyards and the spectacular Mosel views make the hike an unforgettable Pentecost experience. Families, hiking groups and wine tourists from all over the region participate.
Between Alf, Zell and Pünderich, the Mosel unfolds one of its most impressive loops. The steep vineyards often climb the Mosel slopes with gradients of over 60 percent, making cultivation a supreme achievement. The sites produce mineral, cool Rieslings of great class, which are valued as typical Untermosel wines.
The route of the Pfingstweinwanderung leads over the Mosel high trails above the villages of Alf, Zell and Pünderich. Depending on the variant, it covers between 6 and 12 kilometers and can be started or abandoned at various stations. Viewpoints offer spectacular views of the Mosel loops, the Marienburg peninsula and the vineyards.
At several stations along the route, winemakers from the participating villages set up tasting stands. Mosel wine of different vineyard sites, vintages and styles is offered – from dry Riesling to semi-dry specialties to fruity-sweet Auslese. Federweißer (depending on the season), beer and non-alcoholic drinks complement the offer. Hearty dishes, regional specialties and sweet snacks round off the culinary experience.
Pentecost is traditionally a high season for wine festivals and wine hikes on the Mosel. The wine tourism industry offers numerous events, and accommodation in guesthouses and hotels is fully booked. Those who visit the Pfingstweinwanderung Alf-Zell ideally plan a long weekend and combine the hike with other Mosel experiences.
The 2026 Pfingstweinwanderung between Alf, Zell and Pünderich takes place on Sunday, May 24th. Hikers traverse the Mosel high trails, enjoy spectacular views of the Mosel loops, and visit tasting stations where winemakers from the region present their Mosel wines.
