Three days of Volksfest in the town center – rides, flea market, and family fireworks
With the Frühjahrskirmes, the municipality of Steinhagen kicks off its event season every year. In early March, the historic town center around Am Markt, Fivizzanoplatz, and Kirchplatz becomes a festival ground for three days: rides, food stalls, carousels, and a flea market transform the usually quiet city center into a lively Volksfest. The Kirmes is considered a reliable date in the Gütersloh district – families from Steinhagen, Halle, Werther, and Bielefeld have been coming regularly for decades.
The showmen's lineup mixes traditional classics with current highlights. Among others, there will be Formel 1 (Schneider), the high-thrill ride Jetlag (Weber), the trampoline attraction Jump Street (Klaasen), the Musik-Shop (Rasch), and the Ferris wheel classic segment Roue Belle (Thiliant). The children's carousel spins on Fivizzanoplatz, and a small roller coaster for the little ones is also part of the offer. Bumper cars, music express, wiper rides, and simulators cater to the younger and adult target groups.
Parallel to the Kirmes, a flea market around the church will take place on Saturday and Sunday. Here you will find books, vintage fashion, household goods, collectibles, and curiosities from private and commercial vendors. The flea market has been a firm fixture of the Frühjahrskirmes for years and attracts bargain hunters from all over the region to Steinhagen.
The highlight on Saturday evening around 7 PM will be a family fireworks display on Rathausplatz – compact, child-friendly in timing, with good visibility from the entire town center. Before that, there will be a musical stage program on Fivizzanoplatz on Friday evening.
The food stalls offer classic Westphalian and international fare: Bratwurst, fries, mushrooms, Langos, crêpes, corn dogs, churros, fish, gyros, and sweets. Mulled wine, beer, and soft drinks provide the atmosphere – it can still be chilly in March, so a hot drink is usually welcome.
With around 21,000 inhabitants, Steinhagen is strategically located between Bielefeld and the Teutoburg Forest, belongs to the Gütersloh district, and is easily accessible via Steinhagen station (RB 75 Bielefeld–Halle/Westfalen). The municipality is known far beyond the region for its traditional Steinhäger schnapps – fitting the Kirmes atmosphere, a visit can be combined with a tasting.
The 2026 Frühjahrskirmes brings back the proven concept: season opener for showmen from the Bielefeld area, three days of Volksfest in the town center, flea market, and family fireworks. Opening on Friday at 3 PM, continuous operation until Sunday evening.
Admission to the Kirmes is free. Rides typically €2–€5 per ride. Food €3–€10.
By car: A33 (Bielefeld–Osnabrück), exit Steinhagen, then follow signs to the town center. Parking available in the vicinity of the festival grounds (special use also during the Kirmes).
By train: RB 75 (Haller Willem) between Bielefeld Hbf and Halle/Westfalen, stop Steinhagen. Approx. 5 minutes walk from the station to the festival grounds.
Friday, March 6th: 2 PM–10 PM (official opening 3 PM)
Saturday, March 7th: 2 PM–10 PM
Sunday, March 8th: 1 PM–8 PM
Admission to the Kirmes is free. Rides and food are subject to charge (payment usually in cash).
Sunday afternoon is the most family-friendly time – quieter than Saturday evening and with the best atmosphere for small children.
