Over 525 years of Kirmes tradition from the oldest Neuwerk brotherhood
On Frühkirmes Monday, April 27, 2026, the Mönchengladbach district of Neuwerk celebrates its traditional Frühkirmes. The St. Barbara Bruderschaft Neuwerk 1497 e.V. has preserved this tradition since the late Middle Ages — making it the oldest brotherhood in the district and one of the oldest in the entire Lower Rhine region. The festival grounds are located at the parking lot at Gathersweg, 41066 Mönchengladbach.
The highlight of the Frühkirmes is the brotherhood's grand parade featuring its signature horse procession. The St. Sebastianus riflemen lead the horses through the streets of Neuwerk — one of the few major horse processions in Rhenish marksman traditions that are still alive today.
The horse procession is accompanied by a festively decorated parade float, carrying the King and Queen and the brotherhood's dignitaries. The float is elaborately decorated by brotherhood members in the weeks leading up to the Frühkirmes — with flowers, ribbons, the brotherhood's coat of arms, and symbolic elements from local tradition.
The St. Barbara Bruderschaft Neuwerk e.V. was founded in 1497 — a few years after Columbus discovered America. Its patron saint is Saint Barbara of Nicomedia, the traditional patron saint of miners, artillerymen, riflemen, and many other professional groups. With its history of over 525 years, the brotherhood is one of the oldest of its kind in the entire Lower Rhine marksman tradition.
The brotherhood is organized into several committees and groups:
In addition to the Frühkirmes, the brotherhood annually maintains:
The district of Neuwerk, with around 8,500 inhabitants, is located in the north of Mönchengladbach, bordering Korschenbroich. For generations, it has been one of the most traditional districts with active club life, several marksman brotherhoods (St. Barbara and St. Sebastianus), and a strong sense of local identity. The Frühkirmes is one of the most important annual district festivals, bringing together residents of all generations — from the oldest brotherhood members to the children admiring the horses for the first time.
The Lower Rhine marksman tradition is one of the densest cultural traditions in Germany regionally. Almost every district and village has its own brotherhood that celebrates its annual marksman or Kirmes festival. Horse processions have become rarer — in most brotherhoods, the historical rider groups have been replaced by motorized floats. Neuwerk has preserved this tradition, making the Frühkirmes something special. Anyone who has experienced it once gets a direct impression of how the Lower Rhine marksman tradition functioned 100 or 200 years ago.
On April 27, 2026, the St. Barbara Bruderschaft Neuwerk celebrates its 529th Frühkirmes event. The brotherhood, the oldest in Neuwerk, invites you to the horse procession of the Sebastianus riflemen with a decorated parade float — one of the few major horse processions in Rhenish marksman traditions that are still alive today.
