Stadtfest on Germany's largest market square — "By Freudenstadt residents for Freudenstadt residents"
The town of Freudenstadt (around 23,800 inhabitants, district town of the Freudenstadt district) is located on the northern edge of the Black Forest at an altitude of 728 meters — the highest district town in Baden-Württemberg. The town was planned in 1599 by Duke Friedrich I of Württemberg as an ideal Renaissance city based on designs by Heinrich Schickhardt: a square layout with a central market square, which at ~ 4.7 hectares is considered Germany's largest market square. The Oberer Marktplatz is the heart of the town and the venue for the Stadtfest.
The 2026 Stadtfest takes place on the first weekend of July — Saturday, July 4th, 6:00 PM to 2:00 AM and Sunday, July 5th, 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The enormous market square area will be used with a stage, catering stands, play areas, and seating areas — space for thousands of visitors without feeling crowded. An unusual experience for Stadtfest-goers: the area is so large that you can move relaxed between stages, food stalls, and meeting zones.
The official opening on Saturday evening will be performed by Freudenstadt's Mayor Adrian Sonder with a traditional Fassanstich (beer tapping) — a classic element of Southern German Stadtfest openings. Afterwards, the stage will feature live music. The motto "By Freudenstadt residents for Freudenstadt residents" is the program: the Stadtfest is not a tourist highlight, but a community festival for the citizens — organized by Freudenstadt clubs, businesses, and the city administration.
Musically, the regional band Bluestuff (Pop/Rock) dominates Saturday evening with the main performance. In addition, the bands from Freudenstadt schools will perform:
This involvement of school bands is a classic Stadtfest element and gives young musicians a big stage — literally on Germany's largest market square.
The gastronomic offerings reflect the cultural diversity of Freudenstadt and its more than 4,000 foreign fellow citizens:
A special feature of Sunday's program: the Stadtolympiade — a children's olympiad with activity stations from various clubs (sports club, fire department, sports association, scouts). Children aged about 4 and up can visit stations, complete small tasks, and collect points or stamps. The format is accessible, movement-oriented, and a magnet for families.
The 2026 Stadtfest utilizes the enormous Oberer Marktplatz for two days of festivities with a stage, catering, and children's program. Saturday evening from 6 PM, festival opening by Mayor Adrian Sonder with Fassanstich, followed by live music until late at night. Sunday 11 AM–6 PM family program with Stadtolympiade.
The program reflects the diversity of Freudenstadt's community — school bands, regional main band Bluestuff, international cuisine, and a movement-oriented children's offering.
