Bad Frankenhausen – Salt and History by the Kyffhäuser

Bad Frankenhausen is the only salt city in northern Thuringia and the main town of the Kyffhäuser district. The city is known for its leaning Oberkirche tower, its salt springs, and the monumental Panorama Museum "Bauernkriegspanorama" by Werner Tübke. In Advent, the market square with the town hall becomes the center of attention.

Program on the First Sunday of Advent

The people of Frankenhausen traditionally hold their Christmas market on the first weekend of Advent – usually Friday to Sunday. The town center transforms into a compact Advent mile: wooden stalls with mulled wine, bratwurst, candied almonds, and cookies, regional handicraft products, Christmas lighting, and fir branches in front of the historic backdrop of the town hall.

Stage, Choirs, and St. Nicholas

Choirs from Bad Frankenhausen and the region, kindergarten and school groups, and brass ensembles perform on stage. St. Nicholas visits the children. The program is family-oriented and deliberately small, intimate, and traditional.

Festive Conclusion to the Year

The Frankenhäuser Weihnachtsmarkt marks the festive conclusion to the event series of the spa and salt city – following the city festival in summer and the spa concerts of the season.
