About Kultursommer

The Frankenhäuser Kultursommer is the summer cultural highlight of the spa town at the foot of the Kyffhäuser Mountains. In July, concerts, theater, exhibitions, and interactive formats transform the historic town center into an open-air stage, combining the rich cultural heritage of Bad Frankenhausen – especially Werner Tübke's Bauernkriegspanorama – with contemporary programming.

Culture under the open sky

Every July, the Frankenhäuser Kultursommer turns the historic town center into a festival stage. Concerts, theater, exhibitions, and interactive formats are spread across several days and squares. The festival is aimed at all age groups and draws from the special cultural DNA of the city.

The legacy of Werner Tübke

Bad Frankenhausen is closely associated with Werner Tübke's Bauernkriegspanorama (Peasants' War Panorama), exhibited on the Schlachtberg in a specially built circular building – one of the most significant monumental works of GDR art history. This cultural radiance also shapes the Kultursommer: it provides a stage for contemporary cultural work that complements this historical depth.

Bad Frankenhausen – Spa and Salt Town in the Kyffhäuser District

Bad Frankenhausen is a spa and salt town on the southern edge of the Kyffhäuser Mountains and belongs to the Kyffhäuserkreis in northern Thuringia. In addition to the Panorama Museum, the leaning tower of the Oberkirche, the historic brine springs, and the Kyffhäuser Monument just outside the city gates are known throughout the region.

Kultursommer — edition 2026

The Frankenhäuser Kultursommer 2026 will take place from July 2nd to 5th, once again bringing concerts, theater, exhibitions, and interactive formats to the historic town center. The complete program for this edition will be published in spring/early summer 2026 on bad-frankenhausen.de.

As in previous years, the festival focuses on a mix of open-air concerts, open-air theater performances, exhibitions by local and regional artists, and interactive formats for families.

Bad Frankenhausen sees the Kultursommer as a summer complement to its busy annual calendar (e.g., the Bauernmarkt in September, the Lilac Festival in spring) – a format that appeals equally to day-trippers and spa guests.
