About Frankenfestspiele

The Frankenfestspiele Röttingen is one of Lower Franconia's most distinguished open-air theatre festivals. In the historic courtyard of Brattenstein Castle, a striking Hohenstaufen structure overlooking the Taubertal valley, a professional ensemble performs operettas, musicals, comedies, and children's and youth theatre over two and a half summer months. In 2026, Agatha Christie's 'Murder on the Orient Express', the operetta 'Frau Luna', the musical 'Nunsense', and a diverse Young Theatre program (Pippi Longstocking, Robin Hood Jr., The Robber Hotzenplotz and the Moon Rocket) are scheduled – plus the traditional Festival Cocktail.

Theatre Festival in a Castle Setting

The Frankenfestspiele Röttingen is the major open-air theatre festival in the Franconian Taubertal valley. It is organised by the festival's own association, under the patronage of the town of Röttingen; the performance venue is the historic courtyard of Brattenstein Castle, a high medieval complex high above the Tauber river. The castle walls form a natural backdrop, making it one of the most impressive open-air stages in Southern Germany.

Programme Profile: From Musicals to Children's Fairy Tales

Each season, the festival presents three evening productions – a mix of comedy, operetta, and musical – plus the popular 'Festspiel-Cocktail' programme. In addition, there is a separate Young Theatre programme, which celebrates its tenth anniversary in the 2026 season and plays a significant role in the regional cultural landscape with children's musicals and a large concert featuring around 250 children and young people from the region.

Season: June to August

The season runs annually from mid-June to mid/late August. The venue is the castle courtyard, which has seating for approximately 600 people. Performances are mostly held in the evenings, with children's productions also taking place in the afternoons.

Tickets and Early Bird Discount

Tickets are available at the festival box office in the Röttingen Tourist Information centre, online via Reservix, and at affiliated ticket agencies. A 10% early bird discount on all regular ticket prices is available until December 31, 2025; starting prices are around €29.

Röttingen in the Taubertal Valley

Röttingen is a small town in the district of Würzburg in Lower Franconia. Its location at the southern end of the Romantic Road and in the Taubertal valley makes the theatre festival a tourist magnet – many theatregoers combine their visit with a Tauber wine tasting or a stay in the Taubertal valley.

Frankenfestspiele — edition 2026

The 2026 season of the Frankenfestspiele Röttingen runs from June 15 to August 22 in the historic courtyard of Brattenstein Castle. Three evening productions: Agatha Christie's 'Murder on the Orient Express' (crime comedy), the operetta 'Frau Luna', and the musical 'Nunsense'. The Young Theatre celebrates its 10th anniversary with 'Pippi Longstocking', 'Robin Hood Jr.', and 'The Robber Hotzenplotz and the Moon Rocket' – plus a large concert with approx. 250 children and young people. Tickets from €29, 10% early bird discount until December 31, 2025.

2026 Season – Programme at Brattenstein Castle

From June 15 to August 22, 2026, the Frankenfestspiele Röttingen will take over the courtyard of Brattenstein Castle. Three major evening productions will alternate in the schedule: the crime comedy 'Murder on the Orient Express' based on Agatha Christie, the historically light-hearted operetta 'Frau Luna' by Paul Lincke, and the musical 'Nunsense' – a dark humour piece about five nuns staging a benefit.

In addition, the popular Festival Cocktail format is on the programme: a compilation evening with songs, scenes, and highlights from the festival's history. The Young Theatre celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2026 and presents three of its own productions with 'Pippi Longstocking', 'Robin Hood Jr. – The Adventure Musical', and 'The Robber Hotzenplotz and the Moon Rocket', complemented by the 'Grand Concert of the Young Theatre' featuring around 250 children and young people from the region.
