Ten days of literature on the North Sea island
The Föhrer Buchtage are not a classic literary festival as known from big cities. The concept is deeply interwoven with the island of Föhr: Events are spread across the entire island — Wyk, Nieblum, Süderende, Goting, Borgsum, Oevenum — and use both classic halls and unusual venues: thatched-roof cottages, cemetery chapels, beaches, cafés, and even moving island buses as "rolling stages".
The motto for the 2026 edition connects literary reflection on time, rhythms, and change with island reality — because on Föhr, the day is still dictated by ebb and flow. "Tides" also refers to the intergenerational reading public, where a traditional island village like Nieblum meets modern novel authors like Beatrix Gerstberger.
Confirmed guests for the 2026 edition:
In advance, on August 16th, 2026, a lyrical mudflat hike with poets Peter M. Röhm and Hermann Hinsberger will take place — a format only possible on a Wadden Sea island.
Föhr erLesen experiments with literary form. In addition to classic readings, there are staged performances, guided tours, concerts with readings, live podcasts, dialogical Klönschnacks (conversations), literary lectures, and especially the bus readings: While the bus travels across the island, authors read from their works — the landscape outside becomes the backdrop.
Föhr belongs to the district of Nordfriesland in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. With around 8,700 inhabitants on 82 km², Föhr is the second-largest North Sea island in Germany. Wyk auf Föhr — as the island's main town and only seaside resort — is the organizational center of the festival.
From September 4th to 13th, 2026, the island transforms into a literary festival ground with events in Wyk, Nieblum, Süderende, and other locations. The motto "Tides — Everything Has Its Time" invites reflection on rhythms, change, and the passage of time.
Kick-off on September 4th: Beatrix Gerstberger reads from her award-winning novel Die Hummerfrauen. The book tells the story of women by the sea who build their lives around fishing, family ties, and water — a perfect start for a festival that programmatically seeks the connection between literature and the coast.
Already on August 16th, 2026, as a pre-event, a lyrical mudflat hike with poets Peter M. Röhm and Hermann Hinsberger will take place — a format where poems are recited during the mudflat tour.
The complete 2026 festival program will be published around May/June 2026 on foehr-erlesen.de. Key points and highlights:
