Airport Life — The Airfield Becomes a Festival Ground

The Altenburg-Nobitz Airfield is located about 5 kilometers southeast of the city of Altenburg in the Altenburger Land district, just before the Saxon border. What serves regular sport flights and general aviation during the week transforms into a festival ground on the last weekend of May 2026. The 26th Airfield Festival is one of the largest open-air events in Altenburger Land, attracting visitors from Thuringia, Saxony, and all of Central Germany.

Airshows from Morning to Evening

Over two days, the program is packed: aerobatic demonstrations with historical and modern aircraft, formation flying, vintage flights, plus scenic flights for visitors who want to experience Altenburger Land from a bird's-eye view. Anyone who has always wondered what it feels like to be in the air in an Antonov AN-2 — the world's largest single-engine biplane — has the chance here.

Record Attempt: 50 Skydivers from Antonov AN-2

The highlight of the 2026 edition is an announced record attempt: 50 skydivers jumping simultaneously from several Antonov AN-2 aircraft over the airfield. This is not only visually spectacular — when 50 parachutes open at the same time, the sky becomes a mosaic — but also a masterstroke in logistics and organization. The Flugsportverein Altenburger Land has gathered several AN-2s from across Europe for this purpose.

German Armed Forces A400M and Family Program

The German Armed Forces have announced a fly-in with an Airbus A400M (subject to current operational deployment). The A400M is one of Europe's largest transport aircraft and is rarely seen in a civilian setting. If it comes, there will be walkthrough opportunities.

For families, there is a dedicated program: childcare, bouncy castles, games for the little ones, guided bus tours across the airfield (which is normally not accessible), and extensive catering from hearty sausage and burger stands to sweet crepes and ice cream.

Admission €12, Children Up to 14 Free

Admission is clearly regulated: €12 for adults, children up to 14 years have free admission — a family-friendly price for a two-day major event. There are ample free parking facilities on site.

Altenburg — The Skat Capital

Altenburg, the district's administrative town, is known as the 'Skat Capital' of Germany — the game of Skat was invented here. With the Residential Palace (site of the Prince's Robbery spectacle), the Lindenau Museum, the historic old town, and the Playing Card Museum, a visit to the city is definitely worthwhile after or before the airfield festival. The city is celebrating its anniversary year '1050 Years of Altenburg' in 2026.

Altenburg-Nobitz Airfield Festival — edition 2026

The 26th Altenburg-Nobitz Airfield Festival runs on May 30th and 31st, 2026, from 10 AM to 6 PM daily. Planned record attempt: 50 skydivers from Antonov AN-2 aircraft. German Armed Forces fly-in with Airbus A400M (subject to operational deployment). Scenic flights, vintage flights, aerobatics. Family program with childcare and guided bus tours across the airfield. Admission €12 (adults), children up to 14 free.

Two Days of Aviation Festival

On May 30th and 31st, 2026, Altenburg-Nobitz Airfield becomes the stage for aerobatics, a record attempt, and a German Armed Forces fly-in. Every day from 10 AM, the stage and flight program runs until 6 PM, with a dense sequence of demonstrations, scenic flight opportunities, and family activities.

Record and A400M

The highlight is the announced record attempt — 50 skydivers jumping simultaneously from several AN-2s — and the German Armed Forces A400M fly-in. The latter depends on operational deployment but is a typical magnet for aviation enthusiasts.
