Grand City Schützenfest with parade through the city center
Gifhorn, a district capital with around 43,000 inhabitants, celebrates its Schützenfest as an urban summer highlight. Unlike the many village Schützenfeste in the region, this one is celebrated in the entire city center, with parades through the pedestrian zone and ceremonies in the central market square.
Two clubs are responsible for the festival: the Bürgerschützenkorps (BSK) Gifhorn and the Uniformiertes Schützen Korps (USK). Both corps have their own history and identity but cooperate for the annual city festival. This dual structure is typical for many North German city Schützenfeste and ensures high participation from various club sections.
Anyone who wants to experience the Gifhorner Schützenfest must get up early. The parade starts as early as 6:15 AM at Schillerplatz. The uniformed marksmen, with flags, marching bands, and the reigning monarch, march through the still quiet city center to the Schützenplatz. This early morning parade has a special tradition in Gifhorn and is one of the most atmospheric sights of the festival.
At 10:15 AM, the mayor opens the Schützenfest in the market square. The official welcome address, the handover of the city sash to the monarch, and the first drum roll mark the beginning of the grand festival. The close connection between the city administration and the marksmen's tradition reflects the historical significance of the marksmen for the city community.
The classic funfair is set up on the Schützenplatz: carousels, Ferris wheel, roller coaster, food stalls, and a festival tent with live music create the familiar folk festival atmosphere. The King's shooting competition takes place during the festival, and the proclamation of the new monarch is one of the highlights.
The city Schützenfest benefits from its urban location. The parades through the city center, the ceremonies in the market square, and the combined festival tent atmosphere on the Schützenplatz create a festive character that is only possible in district capitals in this form.
With the joint event by BSK and USK Gifhorn, broad participation from the city community is ensured.
