Patron Saint's Day of the Fire Brigade — Service in the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross and festival program at LBZ Hüttersdorf
The Saint Florian has been the patron saint of firefighters for centuries. His feast day (May 4th) is often celebrated in Germany with a special event by the local fire brigades — Florianstag. The Schmelz Volunteer Fire Brigade holds its Florianstag in the Hüttersdorf district, on the weekend in mid-May adjusted to the date. The format is characterized by Catholic Saarland traditions: a festive service in the parish church, followed by a festival program at the Löschbezirk (LBZ) Hüttersdorf.
The day begins with the festive service in the parish church Kreuzerhöhung Hüttersdorf — the Catholic parish church of the district. The brigade enters in uniform with its standard, the fire brigade band or a brass quartet accompanies the liturgy, and the pastor blesses the fire equipment. It is a religious and solemn moment that, in a predominantly Catholic region like Saarland, is more than just pure folklore — it integrates the fire brigade into the social fabric of the village.
After the service, the event moves to the Löschbezirk Hüttersdorf. The operational vehicles are on display for inspection, and young firefighters handle the catering with Schwenker (grilled pork neck), fries, beer, and coffee/cake. A program for families — children's rides, a hands-on water spraying station, a tombola — provides the afternoon's family entertainment. In the late afternoon, representatives from friendly brigades from the Saarlouis district often visit, and in the evening, the festival concludes among club members.
Schmelz is located in the northern Saarlouis district, at the transition from the Saargau to the Hochwald foreland. The municipality, with its nine districts (Schmelz, Hüttersdorf, Limbach, Dorf im Warndt, etc.), is typically organized in a decentralized Saarland manner; each fire station district belongs to a parish, and each parish celebrates its own tradition. The Florianstag in Hüttersdorf is a classic example of the interlinking of club life and church community, which is particularly pronounced in Saarland.
The Florianstag is not a tourist festival but an internal brigade festival with an open door. Visitors from outside are welcome but will notice the familiar, club-like atmosphere: firefighters, their families, the pastor, the mayor, representatives of friendly brigades — not a mass audience, but a focused celebration appreciating volunteer fire protection efforts.
The event is announced in the Schmelz municipality's event calendar and on the Saarland tourism platform Toubiz. The exact hourly schedule will be published by the FFW Schmelz in the weeks leading up to the date.
