The Krückau City's Big Summer Festival — 100 Events and Fireworks over the Harbour
Elmshorn is located in the Pinneberg district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, on the Krückau river, which flows via its tributary into the Elbe and thus to the North Sea. With around 51,000 inhabitants, Elmshorn is the largest city in the Pinneberg district and an important economic and logistics hub on the outskirts of Hamburg. The Krückau harbour was historically the economic heart of the city — today it is the backdrop for one of Schleswig-Holstein's largest folk festivals (Volksfeste).
The Flora Week is Elmshorn's traditional summer festival — the name refers to the historical tradition surrounding Flora, a combination of trade fair, club life, and city festival. The integrated Harbour Festival shifts the focus directly to the Krückau harbour — with ship tours, food stalls at the jetties, and a packed stage programme.
What's special about the programme: It is not created centrally, but is designed by Elmshorn's local clubs and associations. Sports and cultural clubs, associations, and citizen organisations register their contributions — the result is a dense network of around 100 events over five festival days:
The highlight of every festival season is the traditional fireworks display on Saturday evening. The pyrotechnics rise over the Krückau harbour, and their reflections on the water make the event one of the most photogenic festival evenings of the North German summer.
The organiser is the Verkehrs- und Bürgerverein Elmshorn e. V. (VBV) — a traditional citizens' association of the city that has been organising the Flora Week and Harbour Festival for decades. Contact: Ms Hinzmann, +49 4121 268832, [email protected].
The 2026 edition runs from Thursday, August 27 to Monday, August 31, 2026, at Krückau Harbour and in the city centre. As always, around 100 events shape the programme — organised by local clubs and associations and coordinated by the Verkehrs- und Bürgerverein Elmshorn e. V.
The traditional fireworks display will take place on Saturday evening, August 29, 2026, over Krückau Harbour — the festival highlight with the most beautiful reflections on the water.
The complete programme and stage schedule will be published on elmshorn.de and the VBV website.
