Open-air classical music at the Kurmuschel in Sassnitz on Rügen
Since its founding in 1990, the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has been one of Germany's most important classical music festivals. Over three summer months, it brings music to the most beautiful locations in the state – in old manor houses, barns, industrial halls, castles, and churches, as well as in the open air. One of these open-air venues is the Kurmuschel at the Kurplatz in Sassnitz, a shell-shaped pavilion from the early days of the Baltic seaside resort, which now serves as a stage.
The Kurmuschel is located directly on the Sassnitz promenade, overlooking the Baltic Sea. The open-air concert in this setting is a special experience for many festival guests: music and the sea, evening light and the cries of seagulls combine to create an atmosphere that no concert hall can offer. Sassnitz is located in the Vorpommern-Rügen district in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, at the gateway to the Jasmund National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Festspiele MV sees itself as a festival for the entire state. With around 190 concerts at about 80 venues, it reaches tens of thousands of visitors every summer. The programme ranges from large symphony orchestras and chamber music to jazz and crossover. Recurring series such as the prize-winners' concerts, support for young talent, and thematic focuses make the festival known far beyond the region.
For the island of Rügen, the festival concerts at the Kurmuschel are a cultural highlight of the season. They complement the event offerings of the port town of Sassnitz with a sophisticated musical format and attract both holidaymakers and locals. The open-air setting makes the concerts accessible and uncomplicated – classical music to enjoy, with the Baltic Sea at your back.
From June 13 to September 12, 2026, the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will fill the entire state with music. The open-air Kurmuschel at the Kurplatz in Sassnitz is among the approximately 80 venues for the season. The exact concert dates at the Kurmuschel will be announced in the festival programme.
The 2026 Festival Summer features performances by the Sächsische Staatskapelle under Daniele Gatti, violinist Hilary Hahn, the SWR Big Band, and Götz Alsmann. The Armida Quartett is the Artist in Residence for the 2026 Festival Summer.
At the Kurmuschel, concerts combine with views of the Baltic Sea and the Sassnitz promenade – an open-air experience in the maritime ambience of the island of Rügen.
Ticket prices vary depending on the concert. Tickets are available through the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (festspiele-mv.de). Exact dates and prices for the Kurmuschel Sassnitz will be published in the festival programme.
