Classical Festival throughout MV
With around 80 concerts annually, the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is one of Germany's largest classical festivals. Since 1990, it has combined high-caliber classical music with extraordinary venues – castles, monasteries, churches, barns, and industrial facilities – throughout the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Main sponsors include Mercedes-Benz Germany and WEMAG.
Venues in Anklam
The Hanseatic city of Anklam has been a firm fixture in the festival program for years. Concerts were regularly held in St. Mary's Church – one of the most significant brick Gothic churches in Vorpommern, whose 103-meter-high tower dominates the cityscape. Due to the ongoing renovation of the church, the festival will move to the historic auditorium of the Käthe Kollwitz School on the new school campus in the city center in 2026.
Repertoire
The program in Anklam changes from year to year, ranging from chamber music, string quartets, and piano trios to small orchestral formations. In 2026, a Brahms sextet is scheduled, performed by the Armida Quartett with German Tcakulov and Harriet Krijgh.
Regional Context
Anklam is located in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) on the Peene River. The city was one of the four Vorderpommersche Hansestädte (Hanseatic cities of Further Pomerania) and is the birthplace of aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal. The festival concerts honor this cultural tradition and bring international artists to the city in southern Vorpommern.
