Traditional Fasnet race on barrel staves in the Black Forest — Teams of three, costumes explicitly encouraged
The Fassdaubenrennen Tennenbronn is one of the most original traditional events of the Swabian-Alemannic Fasnet. On old barrel staves — the curved wooden planks formerly used to build beer and wine barrels — participants race down a snowy slope in the upper Black Forest in early January. Teams of three compete against each other, with the slowest time per team counting for the ranking. The race is deeply rooted in the local Fasnet and is a fixed part of Tennenbronn's traditions before the actual start of Fasnet.
This year's event took place on Sunday, January 18, 2026, starting at 2 PM. As every year, hundreds of participants and spectators gathered at the Gästetreff Tennenbronn (Hauptstraße, 78144 Schramberg-Tennenbronn). With sufficient snow, the barrel staves raced down the slope — if there was too little snow, the race has successfully switched to the alternative 'Erzkarren-Rennen' for years, where wooden carts are pulled over asphalt.
Teams consist of three people, each riding a barrel stave. The time of the slowest team member counts towards the ranking. A second category honors the most imaginative costume — pirate, witch, Fasnet spirit, cocktail glass on legs, medieval fun character — the jury consists of Erzknappen members. Registration is done in advance online via erzknappen.de or directly on-site. The equipment (barrel staves) is provided by the organizer.
The Erzknappen Tennenbronn are a local traditional association that preserves the heritage of the Black Forest ore miners — Tennenbronn was once one of the most important iron ore mining areas in the central Black Forest. Besides the Fassdaubenrennen, the association also organizes the Erzknappenfest, participates in the Schramberg Fasnet, and operates the small mining museum. The Fassdaubenrennen is one of their most popular events, attracting hundreds of visitors from the Schwarzwald-Baar district and the region each year.
Tennenbronn has been a district of Schramberg in the upper Black Forest since 2006 — a community of 1,200 inhabitants with a long mining tradition. The Tennenbronner Höhe (~770 m above sea level) usually ensures sufficient snow cover for the race in most years. Schramberg itself, the 'City of Five Valleys,' is also known for its Junghans watch production and the Schramberg Museum of Cars and Watches.
This year's event took place on January 18, 2026. Starting at 2 PM, teams gathered at the Gästetreff Tennenbronn — pirates, witches, Fasnet spirits, cocktail glasses on legs — and stormed down the slope in teams of three on barrel staves. As every year, there were two competitions: the time trial with the slowest time per team and the costume competition.
The equipment (barrel staves) was provided by the organizer. Hundreds of visitors from the Schwarzwald-Baar district and the region cheered on the teams and enjoyed mulled wine, Black Forest snacks, and the humorous competition spectacle organized by the Erzknappen Tennenbronn.
