Whitsun Sunday in Hoppegarten — Fashion, Music, Gallop Races, and the Diana-Trial
When parasols are unfurled between Berlin fashion stands on Whitsun Sunday, large hats hover over the racecourse, and thousands of gallop racing fans flock to the trackside of Hoppegarten, it means the Fashion Raceday is on — one of the most elegant event days of the German gallop racing season. On May 24, 2026, the track opens its gates at 12:00 PM, with the first race starting at 2:00 PM.
The sporting centerpiece is the Diana-Trial (Group III, 2,000 m), the most important qualifying race for the Henkel-Preis der Diana in Düsseldorf on August 2, 2026, a classic race with a €500,000 prize fund, open only to 3-year-old fillies. Six to ten of the best German fillies will compete — those who impress in Hoppegarten have a good chance in two months at the Rhine for the country's biggest filly classic. A total of eight races are on the program, plus betting offices and tip comparisons for beginners.
Parallel to the races, the renowned Fashion Contest takes place with the categories “Best Outfit" and “Best Dressed Gang". Berlin designers set up their stalls on the avenue between the grandstand and the parade ring — including milliner Tatiana Ashakova and upcycling designer Esra von Kornatzki. Those arriving without a hat can purchase one at the hat festival or craft their own at the Children's Hat Making Station.
While adults are betting and shopping, there's an experience program for children with pony rides, a bouncy castle, face painting, and a fun betting office. Musically, the afternoon features the JEB Band with 60 musicians performing pop medleys, and in the evening, DJ BeatBozz takes over the after-race party. Culinary offerings range from champagne to the legendary Curry 36 from Berlin, complemented by vegetarian-vegan stands and barbecue classics.
The Hoppegarten Racecourse opened in 1868, making it one of Germany's oldest and most traditional racecourses. It is located in the municipality of Hoppegarten in the Märkisch-Oderland district (state of Brandenburg), directly on the eastern city limits of Berlin. The S-Bahn line S5 provides easy access, making Hoppegarten a Berlin city festival with an equestrian character.
The Diana-Trial (Group III, 2,000 m) forms the sporting centerpiece: Germany's best 3-year-old fillies compete for qualification for the €500,000 Henkel-Preis der Diana on August 2 in Düsseldorf. Seven other races complete the day, including handicaps and weight-for-age races for gallopers of all classes.
