Falcons High Above the Altmühl
Schloss Rosenburg, one of Bavaria's most spectacular hilltop castles, built in the 15th century, sits enthroned on a Jura rock high above the Altmühltal valley. Today, it is one of the most important tourist destinations in the Altmühltal Nature Park. The castle has housed a falconry center since 1978, which is open seasonally from mid-March to mid-October each year. In 2026, the season runs from March 14th to October 18th – seven months of flight demonstrations featuring eagles, falcons, vultures, and buzzards in a setting that makes every visit an unforgettable experience.
Two Daily Flight Demonstrations
During the season, falconers present a flight demonstration daily at 11 AM and 3 PM (except Mondays). The birds of prey are presented in free flight – including Golden Eagles, Bald Eagles, Saker Falcons, Peregrine Falcons, Egyptian Vultures, Griffon Vultures, Common Buzzards, and Goshawks. The demonstrations serve as both an animal exhibition and a zoological introduction to the biology and lifestyle of these raptors.
A Show Falconry Center with Tradition
The Falkenhof Schloss Rosenburg is one of the oldest and most renowned show falconry centers in Germany. The falconers are professionally trained and work closely with the birds. The raptors are not trained for show purposes but are flown freely, mimicking their natural hunting behavior – an important educational concept of the center.
Schloss Rosenburg and Riedenburg
The castle complex itself is worth a visit, independent of the falconry. Riedenburg, the small market town in the valley below the castle, is known as the 'Town of Three Castles' – Schloss Rosenburg, Burg Tachenstein, and Burgruine Rabenstein dominate the valley landscape. Riedenburg is located in the district of Kelheim within the Altmühltal Nature Park, one of Germany's most beautiful and tranquil nature parks. Those planning a visit to the Falkenhof should dedicate a full day to the region: enjoy hikes along the Altmühl river, visit the castle, and sample local cuisine at one of the castle's restaurants.
