Cabaret, Music, and Literature at the Three-Rivers Confluence
The Eulenspiegel Zeltfestival is a Lower Bavarian institution. Since 1994, the festival has opened its doors every year in July at Passau's most spectacular location: the Ortspitze, where the Inn, Ilz, and Danube flow together. The organizers deliberately position themselves against the commercial mainstream, curating a program of cabaret, music, and literature that prioritizes substance over fleeting consumption.
The venue is a colorful circus tent, erected in mid-July, which forms the festival's heart for three weeks. The atmosphere is intimate—artists and audience are close together, with equally good sound quality and sightlines. Performances usually start at 8:00 PM. In the surrounding beer garden under old trees, visitors without tickets can also sit—right at the confluence of the three rivers, with a view of the Veste Oberhaus fortress.
The 32nd edition in 2026 gathers prominent names from the German-speaking cabaret and music scene. Kicking things off on July 8th is the Spider Murphy Gang with their Bayrock—the date was sold out months in advance. On July 10th, Dreiviertelblut follows, the Munich folk-imaginaire project that combines Bavarian dialect with orchestral elements, exploring existential themes like transience.
A highlight in the festival's rhythm is the 25th Passau Art Night on Friday, July 17, 2026, which integrates the Eulenspiegel tent into the city-wide cultural evening. Galleries, museums, and stages open their doors until midnight; the Eulenspiegel tent becomes an integral part of this cultural all-nighter.
Passau, the historic episcopal city on the Austrian border, is one of Lower Bavaria's most atmospheric cities. The old town between the Inn and the Danube, St. Stephen's Cathedral with the largest cathedral organ in the world, and the Veste Oberhaus fortress form the backdrop into which the Eulenspiegel tent has been integrated for over 30 years. Anyone seeking characterful cabaret festivals cannot overlook Passau.
The 32nd festival edition continues the tradition since 1994: curated, sophisticated, and off the mainstream. For three weeks, the tent at the Ortspitze serves as a stage for the best of the Bavarian and supra-regional cabaret and music scene.
Tickets start at €18 for poetry slam evenings; popular headliners cost between €31.50 and €43.50. The beer garden under the old trees is accessible without an entrance ticket and forms the social center of the festival: here, the audience meets before and after the shows, sometimes even with the artists.
