Winter market with mulled wine, straw castle, and regional winemakers at the Rittergut in Saalekreis
When the hustle and bustle of the Christmas markets is over and most other markets have long been dismantled, the Rittergut Etzdorf in the southern Saalekreis opens its gates for one of the region's most beautiful winter events: the Etzdorfer Wintermarkt. The concept is simple and convincing: a well-heated historic courtyard, a festival barn, regional stalls, mulled wine, hearty winter dishes — and all this on a single Sunday in January, for an almost symbolic entrance fee.
The Rittergut Etzdorf is located in the Etzdorf district of the municipality of Teutschenthal, about 15 km west of Halle (Saale). The historic manor complex with its courtyard, barn, and outbuildings has developed into one of the most popular event locations in Saalekreis in recent years — the winter market is one of the more traditional event formats that the Rittergut itself organizes.
What distinguishes the Etzdorfer Wintermarkt from many others is its consistent regionality. The mulled wine comes from Weingut Born from the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region — one of Germany's northernmost wine-growing areas. In addition, there are game dishes (roast venison, wild boar pan) from regional hunts, Käsespätzle, dumpling variations, Langos, fries, goulash cannon, and kale with tofu for the vegetarian option. Crêpes, coffee, and cake round off the culinary offerings.
While the parents enjoy mulled wine, a special program is set up for the children: picture book cinema, a stand from the volunteer fire department, craft activities, candle dipping, face painting — and the traditional highlight: the extra-large straw castle, where children can climb, slide, and hide.
Etzdorf is scenically located in the southwestern Saalekreis, at the transition to the Mansfelder Mulde. You can reach the Rittergut directly from Halle main station by bus line 312. For families from Halle, Merseburg, Querfurt, and the Mansfelder Land, the winter market is a welcome Sunday excursion destination — precisely because it deliberately avoids mass tourism.
Small, cozy, warm. Fairy lights over the courtyard, steaming mulled wine in a wooden mug, wood fires in the festival barn, children romping through the straw castle — the Etzdorfer Wintermarkt is the intimate counterpoint to the large Christmas markets in Magdeburg or Halle. If you want to find something brighter in the winter, this is the place to be.
