Traditional market in the "Kloa Paris" of the Spessart
The Eschau Kerbmarkt is a fixture in the event calendar of the market town of Eschau in the Lower Franconian district of Miltenberg. For generations, the town on the edge of the Spessart has borne the affectionate nickname "Kloa Paris" – a nickname that stands for the self-confident, joyful tradition of the people of Eschau and is particularly palpable during the Kerbmarkt.
The market day begins with a church service in the Epiphaniaskirche, followed by a church procession to the market square. There, the mayor officially opens the market around 11 a.m. Until the late afternoon (approximately 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.), the market square and town centre transform into a lively festival mile.
Around the market square, in the historic town hall, in the Elsavahalle, and on Wildenseer Straße, the Fanfarenzug Eschau, the Musikverein Regina Rück Schippach, and the Bläserchor Sommerau provide musical entertainment. Customs include the "Kerbsuche" (searching for the Kerb), the distribution of the "Kloa Pariser", and a raffle. For children, there is a special programme in the Rathausplatz and the Elsavahalle, including a puppet theatre.
A large flea market takes place the day before, attracting additional visitors to the town and rounding off the market weekend. Stalls with goods, handicrafts, and Franconian specialities complement the offerings.
The Kerbmarkt is much more than a market event: it is an expression of Eschau's village identity and strengthens community life in the Miltenberg district. Clubs, the church, and the municipality jointly organise the festival, thus maintaining a vibrant Franconian tradition.
The 2026 Eschau Kerbmarkt spans two days. On September 13, a large flea market invites you to browse. On Sunday, September 14, the Kerbmarkt follows: After the church service in the Epiphaniaskirche, the church procession proceeds to the market square, where the mayor officially opens the market around 11 a.m. Until about 6 p.m., the Fanfarenzug Eschau, the Musikverein Regina Rück Schippach, and the Bläserchor Sommerau provide music. Customs such as the "Kerbsuche" and the distribution of the "Kloa Pariser", as well as a puppet theatre and children's programme in the Rathausplatz and Elsavahalle, round off the day.
Eschau is located in the Miltenberg district in Lower Franconia, in the Elsava valley on the edge of the Spessart. Travel by car via the B 469 and district roads. The market square and event locations are within walking distance of each other.
Admission to the Kerbmarkt is free. Costs are incurred for food, drinks, and purchases at the stalls.
2026: Flea market on September 13, Kerbmarkt with puppet theatre on September 14 (approx. 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.).
