Roman cavalry demonstrations as part of the Roman Life World Heritage series
Roman cavalry (Equites) was an integral part of the Roman army, with various specializations — light scouts, heavy shock cavalry, mounted archers. In the northwestern province, to which ancient Augusta Treverorum (Trier) belonged, auxiliary cavalry units (Alae) played an important role in securing the Limes frontier and in the logistics of the provincial capital Trier, which temporarily served as an imperial residence.
The demonstrations on the weekend of July 4th/5th, 2026, combine demonstrations of riding attire, armament displays, and riding performances with trained horses. Reenactors will explain the history of Roman auxiliary cavalry, their hierarchy, pay, armament (Hasta, Spatha, helmet, shield), and their significance in the military daily life of the province.
The 2026 edition is part of the city of Trier's World Heritage anniversary program and falls between the major mid-summer events Porta³ and Amphitheater Open Air. The exact venue will be published by the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage Rhineland-Palatinate in spring 2026.
