Harvest Thanksgiving and Family Games on the Sports Field
Erntedank (Harvest Thanksgiving) is one of the oldest festival days in Central Europe. Originally rooted in pre-Christian times and later integrated into Christianity, it has served for centuries as a day of thanks for the completed harvest. In the rural regions of Schleswig-Holstein — especially in the predominantly agricultural marsh and geest areas — the festival is still actively celebrated today, often as a collaboration between the church parish and the local municipality.
Wrohm is a small municipality with just under 1,000 inhabitants in the Dithmarschen district, located on the border between the geest and marsh landscapes. The Dithmarschen district — situated between the Elbe and Eider rivers, the west coast, and the geest — is one of Schleswig-Holstein's most traditional agricultural regions. Cabbage, turnips, grain, pig farming — agriculture continues to shape the land today, and the Erntedankfest reflects this identity.
The Erntedankfest on the sports field follows a proven, simple concept:
A characteristic feature of the Wrohm Erntedankfest is the close cooperation between the church parish and the local municipality. Both organizations ensure that the festival fulfills both religious and social functions — a model that continues to be maintained in many villages in Schleswig-Holstein.
The 2026 Erntedankfest begins on Saturday, October 3, at 11 am on the Wrohm sports field.
Specific details about the 2026 program — participating clubs, participants in the church service, possible children's choir performances — will be announced by the municipality of Wrohm and the church parish via local notices and on wrohm-dithmarschen.de.
According to the municipality's notice, the exact schedule will be communicated "according to the notice board" — meaning the final details will be posted on the village notice boards and in the local press shortly before the event. Experience shows that the afternoon follows the classic Erntedank schedule: brass band, sermon, harvest crown, family games, coffee and cake buffet.
