About Altstadtlauf Buxtehude

The Buxtehude Old Town Run will celebrate its 22nd edition in 2026. On Sunday, August 30, 2026, hundreds of athletes will run through the alleys and streets of the historic Buxtehude Old Town. The Old Town Run is one of the established fun runs in the region between Hamburg and the Altes Land and has become a fixture in the Lower Saxony fun run calendar over the years. The course leads through the half-timbered town center of the Hanseatic city, past the town hall, St. Petri Church, and the characteristic Buxtehude alleys. Various course lengths allow participants of all performance levels to start – from short Bambini runs for the youngest athletes, through school and youth courses, to main runs over typical fun run distances. Families, hobby athletes, and ambitious runners will meet in Buxtehude on this Sunday for a sporting city experience. With its 22nd edition, the run confirms its firm place in the Hanseatic city's event calendar.

22 Years of Old Town Run

The Buxtehude Old Town Run was first held in the early 2000s and has been a regular fixture in the Buxtehude event calendar ever since. With 22 editions, the run looks back on a consistent success story. The run is organized by Stadtmarketing Buxtehude in cooperation with local sports clubs and sponsors.

Buxtehude Old Town as a Running Course

The course through the historic Buxtehude Old Town is the hallmark of the run. Unlike many road races, the routes here lead through the narrow half-timbered scenery, past the town hall, St. Petri Church, and through characteristic Buxtehude squares and alleys. For the runners, this means a special course backdrop – for spectators, short distances between course sections.

Multiple Course Lengths

The Old Town Run traditionally offers several course lengths to appeal to participants of all ages and performance levels. Bambini runs for the youngest athletes over short distances, school and youth runs over medium distances, as well as main runs over typical fun run distances such as 5 or 10 kilometers. The exact course lengths and start times will be published by the organizer in the summer of 2026.

Family and Hobby Sports Atmosphere

The Old Town Run deliberately positions itself as a family and hobby sports event. The atmosphere is warm, the competition is secondary for many participants – running together, experiencing the city from a runner's perspective, and the shared sporting event are the focus. Residents line the course, applaud the runners, and create the typical fun run atmosphere with their participation.

Sporting Weekend with Schützenfest

The date of August 30, 2026, falls close to the Altkloster Schützenfest (shooting festival) and other Buxtehude events. Those who visit the run can supplement their weekend with other Buxtehude experiences.
