Suhl — an independent city in the Thuringian Forest
Suhl is located in the Thuringian Forest in the south of the state of Thuringia and is an independent city. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city was known for its arms manufacturing (Suhl hunting and sports weapons) — today, tourism, ski sports on the Ringberg, shooting sports, and a growing cultural scene shape the cityscape. KULTtRAUM Suhl e.V. — founded in 2014 — is one of the prominent cultural associations in Southern Thuringia.
13th edition of the Street Theatre Festival
The Suhl Street Theatre Festival is the flagship event of the KULTtRAUM Suhl association. Since 2014, it has transformed the city centre of Suhl into an open stage on one September weekend each year. 2026 marks the 13th edition — from September 4th to 6th, spread across six performance areas. Artists from Germany and other European countries will showcase acrobatics, fire shows, clowning, juggling, and circus theatre accompanied by music.
Opening with Open Air Variety
The festival opens on Friday, September 4th, at 8 PM with the "Suhler Open Air Varieté" on the Marktplatz. A mix of variety show and circus gala — a spectacular start to the packed weekend programme. On Saturday and Sunday, from 1 PM onwards, the six performance areas in the city centre will run concurrently: Steinweg, Marktplatz, and four other squares. Daily programme until the evening, often with highlights after sunset (fire shows).
Free admission, donations welcome
As is common at many street art festivals, admission to the festival is free — the artists are paid through audience donations and by the KULTtRAUM Suhl association. Hat donations during and after performances are very welcome. Food and drinks are available from food trucks around the performance areas.
