Wine hike through the steep sandstone slopes above the Maintal valley
Erlenbach am Main in the Miltenberg district belongs to the Churfranken wine region, a part of the Franconian wine country on the Bavarian Lower Main, known for its red wines. The Wengertstreppenfest is not an ordinary wine festival in the market square, but takes place where the wine grows: in the steep, sun-drenched sandstone terraces of the Hochberg.
Under the motto »Enjoy, stroll, toast – where the wine grows«, guests hike up the »Wengertstreppen« – the stairs between the vineyard paths. At several stands, the Erlenbach vintners serve their white, red, and rosé wines. Idyllic seating areas offer wide views over the Maintal valley, Erlenbach, and Klingenberg.
The route begins at the Bergschwimmbad (mountain swimming pool), passes the pavilion, and climbs to the upper vineyard path – a section of the Franconian Red Wine Hiking Trail. A staircase connects it to the middle vineyard path. Around seven local vintners design and manage the festival together, supported by the Economic-Cultural-Tourism department of the town of Erlenbach.
The Wengertstreppenfest makes the identity of Churfranken tangible: steep slopes, distinctive red wines, and a warm community of vintners. For wine lovers from the region and beyond, it is one of the most beautiful occasions to discover the wine landscape of the Bavarian Lower Main on foot.
On Thursday, May 14, 2026, the Erlenbach vintners will celebrate the 16th Wengertstreppenfest on Ascension Day in the sandstone steep slopes of the Hochberg (Terroir f wine terraces). From approximately 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., tasting stands along the vineyard paths invite you to enjoy a variety of regional wines – white, red, and rosé from Churfranken. Idyllic seating areas offer views over the Maintal valley. A voluntary shuttle service runs between the Bergschwimmbad and the first wine stand several times a day, especially for guests with limited mobility.
