'Wia d'Sau durchs Wasser' – Pig trough race in the Fehlbach
The Eittinger Dorffest in the municipality of Eitting (administrative district of Oberding, Erding district) has been a firm fixture in the Lower Bavaria summer calendar since 1981. The organizer is the Eitting volunteer fire brigade; the entire festival takes place around the fire station and the Fehlbach stream (also called Saubach).
The most unusual element is undoubtedly the pig trough race with the motto 'Wia d'Sau durchs Wasser' (Like a pig through water). Two-person teams compete against each other in wooden pig troughs, paddling a course of about 200 meters down the Eittinger Fehlbach. The format is sporty and carnival-esque: knockout system, creative costumes, a jury awards prizes for the first three places and for the most original team outfit.
The 'STÜV' – the Sautrog-Überwachungsverein (Pig Trough Supervisory Association) – oversees compliance with the rules with a wink. Clear guidelines: no excessive silicone for sealing, no motor, no paddles. Those who don't have their own trough can borrow one from the fire brigade.
The festival opens around 11 a.m. with lunch and beer, accompanied musically by the Moosinning Brass Band. In the afternoon, coffee, cake, and ice cream are the focus, and in the evening, the program switches to snacks and an after-race party. For children, there is a bouncy castle, a turntable ladder, and games around the fire station.
Eitting is a municipality in the administrative district of Oberding, located directly on Munich Airport, in the Erding district of Upper Bavaria. The village festival with the pig trough race is one of Eitting's best-known events and has its firm place in the regional event calendar of the Erding region.
The 2026 village festival is officially announced by the administrative district of Oberding for Sunday, August 2, 2026, at the 'grounds at the fire station'. The Eitting volunteer fire brigade thus continues its summer tradition, which has brought the whole village together every year on the first weekend of August since 1981.
The schedule and race rules follow the pattern developed over the years: lunch with brass music, trough inspection from 12:30 p.m., race start at 2:00 p.m., children's program around the fire station, award ceremony in the late afternoon, followed by snacks and dance music.
