Shrove Tuesday on Ice
While the streets are buzzing in the Rhineland and the Catholic carnival strongholds on Shrove Tuesday, Crimmitschau celebrates in a completely different way: on ice. The Kunsteisstadion Crimmitschau in the Sahnpark opens its doors on Shrove Tuesday afternoon for a special family festival — the Eisfasching. Costumed children, parents, and grandparents skate laps on the ice rink, do the polonaise between ice trees and snowmen, and participate in relay races in costume. It's a unique carnival tradition that fits well into predominantly Protestant and non-carnival Saxony.
Program — Costume Competition and Polonaise
The program is manageable and child-friendly: Opening by the Fasching-Verein Langenreinsdorf e. V., then polonaise on the ice — all guests hold hands and snake their way across the stadium. Relay races with various ice-related tasks (obstacle course, puck relays, classics like «skating sack race»). The highlight is the costume competition: The most beautiful costumes are awarded prizes by the association and a jury — prizes for the most creative, funniest, and most beautiful costumes.
Performances and Magic
On the ice, the children's dance group «Step by Step» from Crimmitschau will perform a choreographed show. A clown with a magic show entertains the younger guests, especially during the break between active programs. Additionally, there will be pancakes (Berliner) and sweets for all children — the classic carnival catering. DJs provide musical accompaniment with child-friendly carnival hits.
Rent or Bring Skates
Those who don't own skates can rent them on-site for €5 (plus deposit or ID as security). Bringing your own skates is usually the better option for children who are unsure on the ice. Helmets are recommended, especially for the little ones.
Crimmitschau and West Saxony
The town of Crimmitschau, with around 18,500 inhabitants, is located in the Zwickau district, on the border with Thuringia. It is known for its textile industry history and for the ETC Crimmitschau — the ice hockey club that plays in the ice stadium. Crimmitschau is a true ice hockey stronghold in western Saxony. The Eisfasching concept is an expression of this identity: ice is part of everyday life and tradition here, and Eisfasching makes this accessible with carnival fun for families.
