79th edition of the great wine festival of the Southern Wine Route in the heart of Edenkoben – vintners, live music, parade, and Palatinate specialties over four days
The Edekowwener Woifeschd – officially also known as the Great Wine Festival of the Southern Wine Route – has been held for decades on the fourth weekend of September in Edenkoben. The event brings together vintners, guests, and clubs in the historic town center for four days and serves as a joint flagship for the entire wine-growing region between Neustadt and the French border.
The venue is not a single festival ground, but the entire center: the Weinstraße between the town entrances, Ludwigsplatz with its distinctive fountain, and Kirchbergplatz in front of the Catholic parish church. Here, wine cooperatives and individual wineries set up their stalls, offering the vintages of the Southern Wine Route – from fresh Riesling and Pinot Blanc to robust Pinot Noir.
The opening takes place on Friday evening with the official inauguration and the first tapping of the keg. On Saturday and Sunday, the crowds reach their peak: live music on several stages, Schlager evenings, cover bands, and acoustic concerts create a lively atmosphere late into the night. The traditional highlight is the grand parade on Sunday afternoon with floats from clubs, traditional costume groups, music bands, and the reigning wine queens of the region. On Monday, the festival concludes in a more relaxed atmosphere with pleasant get-togethers.
The culinary offerings are all about the Palatinate: Saumagen (pig's stomach stuffed with pork, liver, and bread), Leberknödel mit Sauerkraut (liver dumplings with sauerkraut), Pfälzer Bratwurst (Palatinate sausage), Flammkuchen (a type of flatbread), freshly pressed Federweißer (young wine), and of course, the classic Dampfnudeln mit Weinsoße (sweet steamed buns with wine sauce). In addition, there are specialties from Edenkoben's bakers and butchers, as well as a growing selection of vegetarian and sweet delicacies.
With around 7,000 inhabitants, Edenkoben is one of the most important wine towns in the Palatinate and the administrative seat of the Edenkoben collective municipality. The town is located at the foot of the Palatinate Forest, framed by Villa Ludwigshöhe, the Rietburg massif, and extensive vineyards. The Woifeschd consciously utilizes this backdrop, making the town a meeting point for wine lovers from the entire region, neighboring Alsace, and far beyond on this weekend.
The 79th edition of the Edekowwener Woifeschd follows the proven schedule of previous years: opening on Friday evening with tapping of the keg, full operation on Saturday and Sunday on all squares, and a relaxed conclusion on Monday. The exact program for 2026 will be gradually published by the city of Edenkoben and the participating vintners in spring and summer.
The structure follows the established cornerstones of previous years: wine service at the stalls of the vintners of the Southern Wine Route, Palatinate gastronomy from clubs and restaurateurs, several music stages with cover bands, Schlager, and acoustic programs, as well as the grand parade on Sunday afternoon with floats from Edenkoben clubs, traditional costume groups, and wine queens.
