Christmas in the Ruhr Area on Königstraße

When, from mid-November, the Königstraße in Duisburg city center is transformed from everyday gray into a "glittering sea of lights," the Christmas season in the Ruhr area begins — the Duisburg Christmas Market opens in 2026 from Thursday, November 12, to Wednesday, December 30. With a duration of 49 days, it is one of the longest Christmas markets in Germany.

Over 100 Wooden Stalls — What You'll Find

More than 100 decorated wooden stalls line the entire Königstraße. The variety of themes covers the entire spectrum of Christmas markets:

• Mulled wine, punch, advocaat, Feuerzangenbowle — with the characteristic mugs of each season.
• Potato pancakes, bratwurst, lard bread, fries, crêpes, Mutzen — Ruhr area classics.
• Gingerbread, stollen, candied almonds, chocolates — sweets for everyone.
• Handicrafts: Christmas decorations, jewelry, ceramics, wooden toys, textiles.
• Specialties: Cheese, honey, sausage, oil manufacturers.

Ice Skating Fun and Curling

A special feature of Duisburg: The "Kufenglück" ice rink with a small rental station is located right in the middle of Königstraße every year. Next to it, there is "Eisstockspaß" (curling fun) — lanes for curling, which you can also book with friends. These two attractions make the Duisburg Christmas Market more than just a market stroll.

Children's Program

For families, there are rides such as a carousel and a small Ferris wheel, plus visits from St. Nicholas in early December and a daily sound program with Christmas music. On weekends, school and church choirs perform.

The market runs for 49 days — with three set closing days:

• Sunday, November 22, 2026 — Totensonntag (Day of Mourning) (Rest day)
• Thursday, December 24, 2026 — Christmas Eve
• Friday, December 25, 2026 — Christmas Day
