Dreifeuerwehrfest Schaalby

Three Brigades, One Municipality

The municipality of Schaalby in the Süderbrarup office, district of Schleswig-Flensburg, in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, consists of several districts, including Schaalby itself, Füsing, and Moldenit. Each of these districts has its own volunteer fire brigade — a North German peculiarity that reflects the historical independence of the former villages. The brigades work closely together, alert each other, and celebrate together once a year.

The Boy-Lornsen Elementary School as the Festival Site

The festival site is the grounds of the Boy-Lornsen-Grundschule in Schaalby, named after the Frisian poet and politician Boy Lornsen (1903–1995), who wrote works such as 'Robbi, Tobbi und das Fliewatüüt'. The school, with its spacious outdoor area, offers room for vehicles, stalls, seating, and play areas.

Program for All Ages

The program — as is typical for such fire brigade festivals in Schleswig-Holstein — combines entertainment and sociability: vehicle show of the three brigades (fire engines, personnel carriers, special equipment), firefighting demonstrations, hands-on activities for children (water spraying target practice, trying on fire helmets), barbecue with sausages and steaks, cake buffet, drinks stand. The focus is on getting to know the fire brigade and recruiting new members.

Community Festival in Southern Angeln

Schaalby is located in the southern part of the Angeln peninsula — a North German cultural landscape that extends from the Schlei to the Förde and is known for its hills, forests, and hedgerows. The Dreifeuerwehrfest is one of the region's most important summer festivals and an occasion that the three districts celebrate together. Free admission, family atmosphere, volunteer commitment — three pillars on which the village community in the state of Schleswig-Holstein rests.
