Dragon Boats in the State Capital
Dresden, with its meandering Elbe river, is a watersports city — and the Dragon Boat Festival on the Loschwitz Elbe bank has developed over the years into one of Saxony's largest dragon boat events. The venue is the stretch in front of the Loschwitz boathouse, not far from the «Blue Wonder», the iconic bridge between Loschwitz and Blasewitz, which has become a visual trademark of the festival.
Competition over 400 Meters
The race course extends 400 meters downstream on the Elbe. Teams from Saxony, Germany, and sometimes from neighboring Czech Republic and Poland compete against each other in various classes: hobby teams, company teams, sports clubs, fun crews. Over 1,000 active paddlers come to the Elbe bank every year, and tens of thousands of spectators line the course and the festival grounds.
Festival Grounds and Family Program
In addition to the races, a dedicated festival area is set up on the Loschwitz Elbe bank with catering, camping, beer table sets, and activities for the whole family. A participant exchange helps individual paddlers join teams. The TC meeting with the race schedule serves as an organizational hub. A special ice cream cake presentation has established itself as a highlight among spectators.
Sponsors and Tradition
The festival is organized by WSV «Am Blauen Wunder» e.V. and supported by numerous regional sponsors: Feldschlösschen, Sachsen Energie, Ostsächsische Sparkasse Dresden are among the long-term partners. Admission to the festival grounds and for spectators along the course is free — the Dragon Boat Festival in Dresden is an entirely accessible Volksfest (public festival) on the water.
