Three Days of Festival Mile in the Baroque Metropolis
CANALETTO — named after the Venetian painter Bernardo Bellotto (called Canaletto), who shaped the image of the baroque city with his famous 18th-century Dresden vedute — has been the great summer festival of the Saxon state capital since 1991. From August 14th to 16th, 2026, the event will take place as a three-day open-air city festival. The stages are spread across both sides of the Elbe: the Altstadt around Theaterplatz, Schlossplatz, Brühlsche Terrasse, Kulturpalast, and Altmarkt — and the Neustadt around Königstraße, Hauptstraße, and Goldener Reiter. In total, over 1,000 artists will perform on around 18 venues and 8 main stages.
Music, Dance, Art — and Free Admission
The program ranges from rock, pop, and electronic music to classical, jazz, and world music, as well as dance, comedy, readings, and family programs. International bands play alongside Saxon newcomers; classical open-air concerts are presented alongside DJ sets. On the Elbe itself, boat charter concerts and the ship parade traditionally take place. Admission to the entire city festival is free — a special feature that distinguishes CANALETTO from many other big city festivals.
Culinary Delights and Illuminations
Over 200 gastronomic stands offer Saxon specialties (Sauerbraten, Senfeier, Quarkkeulchen, Dresdner Stollen) as well as international cuisine — from Czech dumplings to street food from around the world. The highlight on Saturday evening is traditionally the grand fireworks display over the Elbe, unfolding against the backdrop of the Frauenkirche, Hofkirche, and Residenzschloss. The city festival in 2025 attracted 600,000 visitors — one of the most attended open-air events in Saxony.
Saxony, Dresden, and Canaletto
Dresden, an independent city and the state capital of Saxony, is world-renowned as «Florence on the Elbe» for its baroque cityscape — shaped by the Frauenkirche, Zwinger, Semperoper, Residenzschloss, and Brühlsche Terrasse. CANALETTO draws on this cultural heritage: the city festival is not just summer fun but a showcase of the Saxon creative scene and a meeting point for visitors from all over Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic. Those planning a three-day visit to Dresden should not miss the protected venues in the Kulturpalast and on the forecourt of the Frauenkirche.
