Anniversary Edition — 30 Years of the Middle Ages and the Hanseatic League in the City Centre
The Dortmund Hansemarkt celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026. What began in 1997 as a smaller medieval market has developed into one of the largest historical markets in North Rhine-Westphalia. From November 4th to 8th, 2026, the Dortmund city centre will be transformed into a medieval Hanseatic city for five days. The organizer is Agentur Schöne Märkte, which organizes several historical markets in NRW.
Dortmund was a member of the Hanseatic League from the 12th to the 16th century — the most important trading alliance of the Northern European Middle Ages. With its geographical location between Cologne and the Baltic Sea, its connection to Münster, and the Westphalian trade routes, it was a hub of Hanseatic trade. This history is brought to life with the Hansemarkt — the city centre at Alter Markt, Hansaplatz, and Friedensplatz becomes the stage for medieval market life.
The Hansemarkt sees itself as a “Festival for All Senses”. The programme is divided into three experience axes:
Approximately 300 market stalls, showmen, performers, and musicians participate over the five days. This makes the Hansemarkt one of the largest historical markets in Germany. Its size and central city centre location distinguish it from, for example, the Mittelalterliches Treyben zu Mengede in the summer (smaller, in the Volksgarten).
Sunday, November 8th, 2026, is not only the final day of the market but also a Sunday shopping day in Dortmund's city centre from 1 PM to 6 PM. This combines the medieval experience with regular shopping traffic — thousands of additional visitors are expected.
The 30th Dortmund Hansemarkt 2026 runs for five days in the city centre. Special highlights for the anniversary edition will be announced on the official website.
Free admission. Purchases on-site (food, drinks, market goods).
The city centre is accessible via all underground lines (Reinoldikirche, Stadtgarten, Kampstraße). A 5–10 minute walk from the main train station.

If you plan to participate in hands-on activities: there are fewer crowds in the mornings. Sunday shopping (November 8th, 1 PM–6 PM) brings additional buzz. Dress warmly — November weather in the Ruhr area.
