30 Years of the Dortmund Hansemarkt — The Anniversary Edition
The Dortmund Hansemarkt celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026. What began in 1997 as a smaller medieval market has developed into one of the largest historical markets in North Rhine-Westphalia. From November 4th to 8th, 2026, the Dortmund city centre will be transformed into a medieval Hanseatic city for five days. The organizer is Agentur Schöne Märkte, which organizes several historical markets in NRW.
Dortmund as a Hanseatic City — History
Dortmund was a member of the Hanseatic League from the 12th to the 16th century — the most important trading alliance of the Northern European Middle Ages. With its geographical location between Cologne and the Baltic Sea, its connection to Münster, and the Westphalian trade routes, it was a hub of Hanseatic trade. This history is brought to life with the Hansemarkt — the city centre at Alter Markt, Hansaplatz, and Friedensplatz becomes the stage for medieval market life.
Programme — Five Days of Hanseatic Experience
The Hansemarkt sees itself as a “Festival for All Senses”. The programme is divided into three experience axes:
Hands-on Area
- Blacksmithing — Blacksmith workshop with demonstrations
- Rope Making — historical craft
- Basket Weaving — willow processing
- Leatherworking — do-it-yourself leather crafts
Culinary Delights
- Mead — the medieval honey wine
- Fruit Brandies — traditional distillery products
- Traditional German Brewing — brewery demonstrations
- Regional Specialties from Westphalia
Animal Exhibition
- Imkerei Schmidt (Schmidt Apiary) annually presents rare and endangered domestic animal breeds as well as old vegetable varieties
Entertainment — Knights, Acrobats, Music
- Knight Tournaments on the tournament grounds
- Medieval Bands on the stages
- Acrobats and Juggler Art
- Jugglers and Fire Eaters
- Nostalgic Carousels (some over 75 years old!)
Scale — 300 Participants
Approximately 300 market stalls, showmen, performers, and musicians participate over the five days. This makes the Hansemarkt one of the largest historical markets in Germany. Its size and central city centre location distinguish it from, for example, the Mittelalterliches Treyben zu Mengede in the summer (smaller, in the Volksgarten).
Sunday Shopping — The Anniversary Highlight
Sunday, November 8th, 2026, is not only the final day of the market but also a Sunday shopping day in Dortmund's city centre from 1 PM to 6 PM. This combines the medieval experience with regular shopping traffic — thousands of additional visitors are expected.
