13th Summer Evening with Music, Acrobatics, Literature, and Fireworks Display on the "Balcony of Thuringia" — August 29, 2026
The Dornburg Castles form a unique ensemble on a shell limestone rock high above the Saale valley — traditionally called the "Balcony of Thuringia" due to the spectacular view. Three castles within a length of only 400 meters: the Old Castle (medieval), the Rococo Castle (18th century, with a famous Rococo garden), and the Renaissance Castle. Goethe stayed in Dornburg several times — the famous Dornburg inscription "Wer in dem dornenvollen Garten…" (He who in the thorny garden…) is from his pen. Today, the Klassik Stiftung Weimar and the castle administration manage the ensemble, which serves as a museum and event venue year-round.
The Castles Night was launched 13 years ago to utilize the unique architecture and location of the castle complex for a large-scale summer open-air event. Today, it is one of the most important cultural events in the Saale-Holzland district and throughout East Thuringia. The concept: three castles, three atmospheres, one evening — visitors move between the venues, experiencing diverse musical, artistic, and literary programs. Light installations, fire artists, and walk acts in the park, along with catering in the courtyards, create a multifaceted atmosphere.
The 2026 program is exceptionally diverse: Capella Jenensis, the renowned Baroque ensemble of the University of Jena, presents Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in combination with light art — the historic castle rooms become a stage for an audiovisual experience. Tricky Notes bring Celtic Folk to the castle park. The ensemble Le Concert Allemand performs works of German Baroque music. A Flamenco-Tango program with the dancer Joya la India combines Andalusian and Argentinian traditions. Stilt walkers move through the park and the castle courtyards. The evening concludes with a spectacular fireworks display over the Saale valley — a particularly impressive spectacle from the castle terraces.
Dornburg-Camburg is a small town in the north of the Saale-Holzland district, north of Jena. Every summer, the Castles Night attracts thousands of visitors from Jena, Weimar, Erfurt, Naumburg, and the entire Saale region to the castle rock. Those who wish to extend their festival visit can combine it with a Saale valley hiking day — paths lead from the castle rock down into the valley, continuing along Goethe hiking trails to Camburg or south to Kahla and Leuchtenburg. In the state of Thuringia, the Castles Night is one of the most atmospherically valuable summer events.
The 2026 program combines Baroque music (Vivaldi, Le Concert Allemand), Celtic Folk (Tricky Notes), Flamenco-Tango (Joya la India), and visual arts (light art accompanying Vivaldi, stilt walkers) into a multi-layered summer evening. The highlight is the fireworks display over the Saale valley — a spectacular production from the castle terraces with a view of the deep valley. The Dornburg Castles Administration coordinates the program together with the City of Dornburg-Camburg.
