Four-day Kirchweih in the monastery village of Auhausen with a church service, festival tent, and Wörnitz-Musikanten — 2026 marks the 150th anniversary of the Dornstadt Volunteer Fire Brigade
When the festival benches are set up in Auhausen on the weekend before Pentecost, the Dorfkirchweih begins. Three small villages celebrate together here: Auhausen, Dornstadt, and Lochenbach – all districts of the municipality of Auhausen in the Donau-Ries district, in the heart of the Swabian-Franconian border region. The event is organized by the Dorfgemeinschaft Auhausen, Dornstadt und Lochenbach e.V. (Village Community Association).
The center of the festival is the Romanesque Monastery Church of St. Maria and Gotthard, a landmark of the Wörnitz valley. On Kirchweih Sunday, the traditional church service takes place here – followed by a festive lunch, accompanied musically by the Dornstadt Music Band.
The festival grounds in the village center offer a classic Kirchweih program: a children's carousel, chain flyers, and a shooting gallery for the little ones, and a festival tent with daily changing live bands for the adults. Regular performers include the Wörnitz-Musikanten, regional cover bands, and local village bands. A tradition is the Krenfleischessen on Whit Monday — a hearty closing meal of pork with freshly grated horseradish, which traditionally concludes the Kirchweih.
The 2026 edition coincides with a special anniversary: the Dornstadt Volunteer Fire Brigade celebrates its 150th anniversary. This makes the 2026 Dorfkirchweih a doubly festive weekend, with a program to be announced on the municipal website in the weeks leading up to the festival.
Auhausen is located about 25 km northeast of Donauwörth on the southern edge of the Frankenhöhe, directly on the Wörnitz river. The region is characterized by small Protestant monastery villages, the nearby Hesselberg (the highest mountain in Middle Franconia), and the Romantic Road. A visit to the Kirchweih can be combined with a hike along the Wörnitz or an excursion to Wassertrüdingen.
The 2026 Dorfkirchweih will take place from Friday, May 8, to Monday, May 11, 2026, in Auhausen. The organizer is the Dorfgemeinschaft Auhausen, Dornstadt und Lochenbach e.V. (Village Community Association).
On Sunday morning, as always, the Kirchweih church service will be held in the Romanesque Auhausen monastery church, followed by music in the festival tent for lunch. Monday is traditionally dedicated to the Krenfleischessen. The highlight of the 2026 edition is the 150th anniversary of the Dornstadt Volunteer Fire Brigade.
