A Festival with Over 35 Years of History
"Der Krater Bebt" is one of the oldest continuously held open-air festivals in the Nördlinger Ries. Since 1989, the association Krater Kultur e.V. has been bringing bands from the rock, pop, indie, and cross-genre categories to Megesheim — a tiny municipality in the Donau-Ries district with only a few hundred inhabitants. With around 1,000 visitors per weekend, the festival is small enough to preserve the club atmosphere — and large enough to offer a real festival experience.
The Name and the Nördlinger Ries
The name "Der Krater Bebt" refers to the Nördlinger Ries — an approximately 24 km wide meteorite crater that formed about 14.5 million years ago and shapes the landscape of northern Swabia and Bavaria today. Megesheim lies in the valley floor of this geologically unique area, framed by the gentle heights of the crater rim. The Ries is a UNESCO Geopark and one of the few large impact craters preserved in Europe.
The Festival Grounds
The venue is the Festwiese am Munninger Weg 5 in Megesheim. A rural open-air stage with camping facilities on the grounds, simple infrastructure, and the typical Ried-meadow scenery. Those who come, come with a tent — the major cities of Munich (140 km), Augsburg (90 km), and Nuremberg (110 km) are too far for a day trip.
Cross-Genre Program
The musical focus is on German-language rock and pop, supplemented by cross-genre acts: indie rock, punk, sometimes hip-hop and electronic artists. Over the years, both regional bands from Southern Germany and national acts have played here. The band confirmations for each edition are communicated via Krater Kultur e.V. and festival databases (Festival-Alarm, etc.).
Club Festival with a DIY Ethos
Krater Kultur e.V. is a non-profit association — surplus revenue flows back into the festival and regional music culture. The organization is almost entirely voluntary, which is reflected in the moderate prices and the cozy atmosphere. Festival-Alarm also offers rain insurance through its partner Wetterheld (up to €300 refund per rainy day).
