Sporting Counterpart to the Matjes Volksfest
While the Emden Matjes Days have shaped the harbour mile as a maritime Volksfest (popular festival) for decades, the Matjes Run has simultaneously developed into a firm fixture of the festival weekend. Initiated by the Emden Running Group, it is now one of the largest Volkslauf (popular run) events in East Frisia. Sports enthusiasts from all over the North-West travel for the run and use the event as a season highlight.
Distances for All Age Groups
The range of distances covers all levels, from the children's run to the 10km main race. Competitions are offered over 600m (Bambini), 1,500m, 2,500m (school runs), 5km, and 10km. The main races (5km and 10km) are certified courses; times count towards regional and national rankings. An additional walking course is available for walkers and Nordic walkers.
Course Through Emden City Centre
The course leads through the central areas of the city centre – past the Ratsdelft, through the historic alleys, and along the festival market areas of the Matjes Days. For the 2026 edition, the course has been slightly adjusted due to a construction site in Neutorstraße. Exact course maps will be published on the organiser's website before the run.
Entry Fees and Registration
The entry fee is 17 EUR for adults and 8 EUR for children and young people. Registration is possible via the organiser's online registration. Late registration on the day of the event may be possible depending on availability, but is not guaranteed. Race packs will be handed out on the day of the event in the start area.
Emden Matjes Run — edition 2026
The 2026 Matjes Run is part of the multi-day Matjes weekend and is the highlight on Saturday. The atmosphere benefits from the parallel Volksfest (popular festival): cheering along the course, music from the festival stages, and a well-attended finish area accompany the participants. Detailed course maps, start times for each distance, and results lists will be published on the website of the Emden Running Group.
Based on previous years, several hundred runners from East Frisia and the wider North-West region participate in the various competitions annually. The certified main races (5km and 10km) are included in regional rankings.
Programme Emden Matjes Run 2026
The exact schedule for 2026 will be published by the organiser in advance. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
- Morning – Handout of race packs, 600m Bambini run
- Midday – 1,500m and 2,500m school runs
- Early Afternoon – 5km main race, Walking/Nordic Walking
- Late Afternoon – 10km main race, award ceremonies
- Throughout: Refreshment stations along the course, medical services
