Grand medieval market with jousting tournament in the baroque old town
The Historischer Markt Oettingen is one of the most famous medieval markets in Southern Germany. The venue is the baroque Schlossstraße in Oettingen i.Bay., a historic town in the district of Donau-Ries in Bavaria, very close to the Nördlinger Ries, which was formed by a meteorite impact. The contrast between baroque architecture and medieval market activities gives the festival its special atmosphere.
The centerpiece is the knights' tournament: noble knights on horseback charge at each other with lances, shattering numerous wooden weapons. Visitors can also watch the masters of ancient crafts at work and explore authentic camp life from different eras. Over 100 stalls with craftsmen and traders offer a wide range of goods, along with medieval food and drinks.
Minstrels, jugglers, witches, magicians, and all sorts of characters entertain day and night. For children, there are knight games and interactive workshops – children under 130 cm tall have free admission. The market thus offers a varied program for the whole family.
Special highlights are the evening events. The 'Night of the Fools' on Friday evening brings acrobats, fools, fire shows, and a night tournament to the Schlossstraße. The 'Night of the Minstrels' on Saturday evening culminates with music and fire spectacles on five stages. The organizer is Historischer Markt Oettingen e.V.
The 2026 edition spans three days. On Friday evening, the 'Night of the Fools' opens with acrobats, fools, fire shows, and a night tournament. Saturday offers a full day of knights' tournament, crafts, and camp life, before the 'Night of the Minstrels' follows in the evening with music and fire spectacles on five stages. Sunday is dedicated to the tournament, market activities, and the children's program. Children under 130 cm tall have free admission.
Oettingen i.Bay. is located in the Donau-Ries district in Swabia. By car via the B466 or the A7 (exit towards Nördlingen/Oettingen). The market takes place centrally on Schlossstraße.
Friday from 7:00 PM, Saturday from 1:30 PM, Sunday from 11:00 AM.
