Traditional Bavarian village festival on the village square organized by Freischütz
Walpertskirchen is a small community of around 1,900 inhabitants in the southeastern district of Erding, in the heart of the Erdinger Moos. The first documented mention dates back to the year 748 – in 2023, the village celebrated its 1,275th anniversary with a grand traditional Bavarian village festival. The annual village festival on the second Sunday in June continues this tradition and is one of the village's most important gatherings.
The village festival is organized by the marksmen's club Freischütz Walpertskirchen, one of the oldest and most active clubs in the community. The marksmen provide the organizational framework, taking care of catering, setup, and the program. Their club life is closely intertwined with the village's identity: king's shooting, raft racing, marksmen's balls, and the village festival itself are part of the annual festive calendar.
The festival takes place on Walpertskirchen's village square, the center of the town. As befits a traditional Bavarian village festival, there are beer tent seating, freshly tapped Bavarian beer (often from Erding itself), snacks, delicacies like grilled fish on a stick (Steckerlfisch), roast pork (Schweinsbraten), chicken (Hendl), and white sausages (Weißwürste), along with cake and coffee. The music is provided by brass bands and traditional costume groups from the Erdinger Moos. A children's program is also included – a typical family village festival.
Walpertskirchen is located on the Sempt-Flötzbach river in the Erdinger Moos, just a few kilometers east of the Therme Erding spa. The community is easily accessible via the B388 federal highway, with Munich Airport located to the north. Despite its proximity to the major city of Munich, Walpertskirchen has retained its rural character – and the village festival is the best place to experience this way of life.
The festival day starts as usual at 11 a.m. on Walpertskirchen's village square. Throughout the morning, brass bands from the Erdinger Moos will play; table reservations in the beer tent can be made through the marksmen's club. Lunch will feature roast pork, chicken, white sausages, and grilled fish on a stick (Steckerlfisch); in the afternoon, there will be coffee and homemade cakes from the women's section of the clubs. Children can look forward to their own program with games and small competitions.
The festival day concludes in the late afternoon with dance music. In case of rain or storm, Freischütz will postpone the festival to June 21, 2026 – the decision will be announced at short notice via the community website and notices in the village.
