Family festival at the steam railway grounds in the northern St. Wendel district
As the summer holidays approach, the municipality of Namborn — in the far north of Saarland, on the border with the Hunsrück — invites you to the traditional Dorffest (village festival). The venue is the steam railway grounds, a special location: here run the tracks of the historic Tholey–St. Wendel narrow-gauge railway, an industrial heritage reminder of Saarland's railway history.
The opening on Saturday evening is by the Saarland cover band Gunnowend Rodriguez, one of the most popular live acts in the St. Wendel district. With a mix of German Schlager hits, international pop classics, and their own dialect songs, they ensure a great atmosphere late into the night. Live music starts: 8 PM.
Sunday is family day with a packed program:
The catering follows the classic Saarland village festival concept: Schwenker (grilled meat skewers) from an open fire, Lyoner sausage with fried potatoes, bratwurst, fries, mixed salad. Accompanied by draft beer, mixed wine spritzers, and soft drinks. Coffee and cake on Sunday afternoon come from the villagers' home baking. The proceeds go to the associations' activities and the maintenance of the historic railway line.
Namborn, with its approximately 3,500 inhabitants, is manageable — which is precisely what makes the village festival so special. Those who want to experience Saarland in its most rural and tranquil form will feel right at home here. Worth seeing are the narrow-gauge railway with its historic locomotives, the parish church, and the extensive forests around the village, which are suitable for hiking and cycling tours.
The 2026 edition falls on the last weekend of June, June 29 and 30, 2026. The venue is the steam railway grounds in Namborn.
The full program will be published in June 2026 by the municipality of Namborn.
