Traditional village festival in the Reupzig district of the town Südliches Anhalt
The town of Südliches Anhalt is one of the most expansive municipalities in Germany – a sprawling town in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district in Saxony-Anhalt, formed from over 30 districts. One of these districts is Reupzig, a village with a classic village structure: church, festival grounds, club life, traditional identification with its homeland. Every year on the last weekend of May, this identification comes alive in the form of a Dorf- und Heimatfest (village and homeland festival).
The program follows the proven structure of an Anhalt village festival: Opening on Saturday afternoon with a welcome by the local mayor, followed by live music in the festival tent, a beer tent with local clubs and food stalls, and a children's area with games. Sunday features a morning pint with brass music, the family afternoon, and the festival winding down in the late afternoon. The village clubs – marksmen, fire department, sports club, heritage club – provide the staff, catering, and entertainment.
Anhalt-Bitterfeld is a predominantly rural region with a strong homeland festival culture. While the industrial centers of Bitterfeld-Wolfen and Köthen are undergoing transformation, rural culture has proven surprisingly resilient. Homeland and village festivals, harvest festivals, Pentecost festivals – they form the solid framework in which the village community celebrates itself. Reupzig is a typical example of this lived form of community care.
Reupzig is located between Köthen and Aken, on the edge of the Mosigkauer Heide. The area is scenically diverse – forests, fields, small streams – and rather undiscovered by tourism. Visitors to the homeland festival can complement their stay with a visit to Köthen (Bach town) or Dessau (UNESCO Bauhaus).
