Grand Village Anniversary for the 750th Occurrence of First Mention
Meilendorf, a small district of the town Südliches Anhalt in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district, was first mentioned in a document in 1276 – as "Meghendorp" in a medieval feudal charter. 750 years later, in August 2026, the village community will celebrate this anniversary with a grand festival: one of those rare date highlights that shape a village once every 25, 50, or 100 years.
Meilendorf is located in the Köthener Ebene, a fertile agricultural landscape between the Saale and Mulde rivers in southern Saxony-Anhalt. Like many villages in the region, it has experienced change in recent decades: administrative reforms, demographics, economic restructuring. Nevertheless, the village community has remained vibrant – supported by clubs, the volunteer fire department, and dedicated citizens who are preparing the 2026 anniversary festival.
The exact program will be gradually released by the festival committee in the months leading up to the festival. As with comparable village anniversaries in Saxony-Anhalt (e.g., 750 years of Holungen, 1050 years of Teuchern, 700 years of town charter for Zahna), expect a parade with historical costumes, a stage program with local and regional bands, a children's program, culinary stands with traditional dishes, an evening dance in the festival tent, and perhaps a fireworks display. Former residents and Meilendorf natives who have moved away will travel from all over Germany to be present at the anniversary.
The 750th village anniversary of Meilendorf is a good example of the vibrant festival culture that characterizes rural Saxony-Anhalt: small-scale, community-driven, identity-building. In the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district – a region that oscillates between industrial history (Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Ferropolis) and rural character – such village anniversaries are an important social anchor.
The festival committee has been preparing for the big day for months: 750 years of Meilendorf will be celebrated with a festival day that involves the entire village community as well as guests from the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district and beyond. The exact program – parade route, stage acts, festival tent program, fireworks – will be published in the weeks before the date on the website of the town of Südliches Anhalt.
Detailed program: Publication in the summer weeks on suedliches-anhalt.de.
Meilendorf is located in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district, about 15 kilometers southwest of Köthen. By car: A9 (exit Köthen or Dessau-Süd), then B187 or B6. By train: Köthen or Aken station, then continue by bus or taxi. Parking spaces in the village will be expanded for the festival.
Admission to the festival grounds is generally free. Food and drinks for a fee. Special programs in the festival tent may require admission.
Visitors can combine the festival with a tour of the Bauhaus city of Dessau-Roßlau or the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm – both UNESCO World Heritage sites and less than 30 kilometers away.
