Romantic Christmas market between the two churches — only wooden stalls
The Döörper Weihnacht — in High German 'Village Christmas' — has been the most important Christmas market in the Rhein-Sieg district for over 25 years and is an insider tip for anyone seeking Advent atmosphere beyond the big city Christmas markets. From Saturday, December 5th to Sunday, December 6th, 2026 — on the second Advent weekend — the center of Ruppichteroth transforms into a festive fairy-tale world between the Protestant and Catholic churches.
What makes the Döörper Weihnacht unique: Plastic pavilions and standard market stalls are expressly forbidden. Exhibitors must build their stalls from wooden huts — self-built, borrowed, or provided by the citizens' association. This regulation creates the iconic look of the market: over 80 individual wooden huts, decorated with fir branches, fairy lights, and handmade signs. No plastic, no convenience food — the market looks as a Christmas market should.
The market extends between the two churches of Ruppichteroth: the Protestant church and the Catholic St. Severinus Church. This symbolic connection of denominations — typical for many villages in the Bergisches Land — gives the event an ecumenical character. Both churches are open during the market and offer services and short concerts.
Ruppichteroth is a municipality in the Rhein-Sieg district, just under 60 kilometers east of Cologne — nestled in the hilly landscape of the Bergisches Land. With around 10,000 inhabitants, it's a typical village in the Bergisches Land — yet the Döörper Weihnacht attracts thousands of visitors from Cologne, Bonn, Siegburg, and the entire Rhein-Sieg district every year.
By car via the A3 (exit Hennef or Eitorf) or the B 478. Parking around the town center, then walk to the market. Free admission. Dogs on a leash are welcome. Wear sturdy shoes — the market extends over cobblestone areas.
