The most romantic Advent season in the Bergisches Land

The Döörper Weihnacht — in High German 'Village Christmas' — has been the most important Christmas market in the Rhein-Sieg district for over 25 years and is an insider tip for anyone seeking Advent atmosphere beyond the big city Christmas markets. From Saturday, December 5th to Sunday, December 6th, 2026 — on the second Advent weekend — the center of Ruppichteroth transforms into a festive fairy-tale world between the Protestant and Catholic churches.

Only wooden stalls — the charming standard

What makes the Döörper Weihnacht unique: Plastic pavilions and standard market stalls are expressly forbidden. Exhibitors must build their stalls from wooden huts — self-built, borrowed, or provided by the citizens' association. This regulation creates the iconic look of the market: over 80 individual wooden huts, decorated with fir branches, fairy lights, and handmade signs. No plastic, no convenience food — the market looks as a Christmas market should.

What you'll find at the market

  • Mulled wine specialties — from classic red to white cuvée, egg punch, hot mead
  • Bergisches Kaffeetafel pastries — Berliner doughnuts, lard pastries, gingerbread from regional bakeries
  • Arts and crafts — nativity figures, Advent arrangements, wood art, felt jewelry, Bergisches blacksmith work
  • Regional specialties — honey from the Bergisches Land, herbal liqueurs, cheese from the Rhein-Sieg district, game sausage
  • Music — brass band, school choirs, live music on the central stage

The geography of the market

The market extends between the two churches of Ruppichteroth: the Protestant church and the Catholic St. Severinus Church. This symbolic connection of denominations — typical for many villages in the Bergisches Land — gives the event an ecumenical character. Both churches are open during the market and offer services and short concerts.

Ruppichteroth — the Bergisches Village

Ruppichteroth is a municipality in the Rhein-Sieg district, just under 60 kilometers east of Cologne — nestled in the hilly landscape of the Bergisches Land. With around 10,000 inhabitants, it's a typical village in the Bergisches Land — yet the Döörper Weihnacht attracts thousands of visitors from Cologne, Bonn, Siegburg, and the entire Rhein-Sieg district every year.

Getting there and practical information

By car via the A3 (exit Hennef or Eitorf) or the B 478. Parking around the town center, then walk to the market. Free admission. Dogs on a leash are welcome. Wear sturdy shoes — the market extends over cobblestone areas.

Döörper Weihnacht — edition 2026

The 30th edition of the Döörper Weihnacht takes place on the 2nd Advent weekend in the center of Ruppichteroth. Over 80 exclusively wooden huts between the two churches, mulled wine, regional arts and crafts, music from the brass band — the most romantic Advent atmosphere in the Rhein-Sieg district.

Two days of Christmas market with the strict standard: only wooden stalls, no plastic pavilions. Over 80 decorated huts with regional specialties, mulled wine, and arts and crafts. The brass band and school choirs perform at several locations.
