Enjoyment, culture, and wine on the second Saturday of September around Lutherplatz and Schlossbergkeller
Anyone strolling through Döbeln on the second Saturday of September will immediately notice that this wine festival is different. No beer stalls, no giant stage, no loud Schlager music — instead, fairy lights strung between the houses on Lutherplatz, a gentle murmur of conversation around the standing tables, the clinking of glasses shimmering with Saxon Riesling and Müller-Thurgau. The epithet "Wine Festival of a Special Kind" is its motto: enjoyment, culture, selected wines, and culinary delights in a setting that takes place on historic stones around St. Nicolai Church and the Schlossbergkeller.
Saxony is one of Germany's smallest wine-growing regions, and Döbeln lies on its northern edge. The wine festival demonstrates that vintners and connoisseurs have a home here, even outside the well-known growing areas of Meißen and Radebeul. Regional vintners serve wine on Lutherplatz — Weißburgunder, Goldriesling, Traminer, and occasionally a mature Spätburgunder. The offering is complemented by vintners from other German growing regions invited as guests, as well as by local restaurateurs providing culinary accompaniments: Flammkuchen, Saxon cheese platters, game dishes from the forests of Mittelsachsen.
A special feature that makes the Döbeln Wine Festival unique: the Schlossbergkeller is opened as part of the event. The historic cellar vaults beneath Döbeln's Schlossberg are not accessible the rest of the year — but on the festival day, they transform into an atmospheric tasting room. Descending a staircase, one enters another era: cool masonry, subdued light, the aroma of wine and old stone. Accompanying this is an exhibition on the city's wine-growing history, showing that wine was cultivated in and around Döbeln for centuries before climatic changes and pests brought cultivation to a halt in the 19th century.
Two stages provide musical accompaniment — deliberately unobtrusive, more like a jazz combo, singer-songwriter, blues quartet, or classical ensemble than Schlager. The traditional highlight is the crowning of the "Döbelner Reblaus": each year, a representative of the wine festival is chosen to represent the festival externally for one year. The program is rounded off by a wine quiz with prizes for connoisseurs and those eager to learn.
With just under 24,000 inhabitants, Döbeln is the largest town in the Mittelsachsen district outside of Freiberg. Its location between Dresden (approx. 60 km) and Leipzig (just over 70 km) makes it an insider tip for weekend excursions — the old town with its restored burgher houses, St. Nicolai Church, and the Schlossberg form a compact backdrop into which the wine festival seamlessly integrates.
On the second Saturday of September, Lutherplatz once again transforms into a small, finely curated wine market. Saxon vintners and invited guests from other growing regions present their wines, and regional restaurateurs provide culinary accompaniments, while the Schlossbergkeller opens its doors.
Applications for a stand are possible until the end of May 2026 — the selection is made by the City of Döbeln together with the festival committee, with the aim of maintaining the standard of previous years. The exact stage program will be published in the summer of 2026.
